We are currently seeking a talented school counsellor to join the team at Christ the King Elementary School. Christ the King Elementary School provides a faith-based, Roman Catholic education within the public school system of Yukon Education. Our school sits on the traditional territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council within the wilderness city of Whitehorse, Yukon. CKES is a K-7 school of approximately 360 students, serving a diverse cultural population. Our educational professionals facilitate academic excellence and model life-long learning. We assist students in developing a relationship with Jesus and appreciation of self and others. The uniqueness of each child is celebrated. This position provides support for individual students or small groups of students who have special needs. These needs may be academic, medical, behavioural, social-emotional, or a combination of these. Students with such needs require patience, compassion, and knowledge of strategies that support neuro-diverse learners.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent in Elementary Education;
  • Teaching experience;
  • Masters in counselling degree, or related coursework;
  • Teaching experience with integration of social and emotional learning throughout classroom programming.
  • Experience incorporating First Peoples Principles of Learning across the curriculum;
  • Training and/or experience in trauma responsive educational practices


DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Strong ability to adapt and modify curriculum to meet a range of learning styles and abilities;
  • Strong ability to develop differentiated instructional opportunities for students, to collaborate with LAT teachers and educational assistants;
  • Ability to use trauma-informed approaches to develop effective relationships with students
  • Ability to assess students’ learning and report progress to parents/guardians using Assessment for Learning and outcome-based grading principles on a competency-based curricular framework;
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills working with parents, staff members, consultants, and community agencies;
  • Willingness and ability to participate in the total school program including religious education;
  • Willingness to support the school mission statement and participate in all religious activities;
  • An appreciation of the cultural diversity of the Yukon with the ability to incorporate and promote this diversity within the faith life of the school community;
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity towards the culture and aspirations of Yukon First Nations and a culturally diverse student population




CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process
  • Yukon First Nations 101, to be completed at your first opportunity.


Relocation may be available.


Preference will be given to candidates who are practicing members of the Roman Catholic Church, committed to excellence in Catholic Education.
