SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
CVC’s Warwick Nursery produces 40,000 to 50,000 container-grown native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers for restoration and naturalization each year and also provides CVC’s many planting programs and partners with a reliable source of native plants.
The Technician, Nursery Operations reports to the Senior Coordinator, Nursery Operations and supports the operations and administration of the CVC Warwick Nursery by supervising potting operations and plant care activities, assisting with inventory management, procurement, order tracking, and shipping. This position provides excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Education/Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in horticulture, agriculture, forestry, natural resource management, environmental science, biology, or related field
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license in good standing
- Exterminator License (Agriculture, Forestry or Landscape class), or ability to obtain within 6 months
- Certified Arborist or Horticulture Technician preferred
- Certified Seed Collector preferred
Experience
- 2-3 years of experience related to major tasks
- Outdoor work experience in nursery production, greenhouse operations, tree planting, forestry, or habitat restoration
- Supervisory experience related to major tasks
- Proven experience with the safe operation of sprayers, utility vehicles, and general nursery/landscape maintenance tools and equipment
- Proven experience with the safe loading, hauling, and unloading of trucks and trailers
- 3+ years working in a container production nursery preferred
- Experience using database or inventory management software preferred
- Experience with nursery potting machines, tractors, skid-steers, and irrigation systems preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability
- Excellent organizational skills
- Good tree, shrub and plant identification skills
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
- Familiar with integrated pest management techniques
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office suite
- Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision and take a leadership role during peak seasons
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbal and written, with internal and external contacts
- Ability to allocate one’s time effectively (prioritize) and manage multiple demands simultaneously
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Standard First Aid and CPR certificate preferred
- Knowledge of tree and shrub silvics preferred
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS
- Regular duties include, but are not limited to; potting, pruning, pest control, crop spacing, watering, weeding, stock winterization, general care of nursery stock, and providing direction to crews
- Maintaining accurate inventory of nursery stock and materials, ordering more materials as required
- Inputting detailed inventory records of plants, materials, supplies and equipment into CVC’s nursery inventory management system.
- Assisting with planning of production areas, grading of stock, and inventory control
- Supervising hourly staff including hiring, training, assigning work, conducting performance reviews, and ensuring high standards of work quality
- Supervising potting operations in spring (4-6 weeks)
- Identifying, reporting, and addressing plant needs in a timely manner
- Applying pest management products/pesticides to nursery stock
- Administering an irrigation schedule according to stock needs and weather conditions, and assisting with any necessary irrigation system maintenance and repairs
- Reviewing, preparing, and shipping orders
- Preparing and tracking customer invoices
- Corresponding with internal and external programs, clients, suppliers and partners
- Providing operations-related information to the senior coordinator to assist in production, budget, and other administrative planning
- Maintaining clean and organized work areas
- Conducting work in a safe manner and providing and enforcing health and safety training of staff to ensure a safe working environment
- Other duties and projects as appropriate to the position.
