Job Profile

There is an immediate opening for the Supervisor of Recreation - Children and Youth within the Recreation & Culture Division of the Community Services Department. The Supervisor of Recreation - Children and Youth Services provides leadership to the City’s recreation programs, services and events related to children, youth, and inclusion. Specifically, the supervisor oversees the staff and day-to-day operation of the Dolson Centre, the Johnson Centre, camps, inclusion and youth initiatives.

This position provides leadership to recreation programs and events conducted outside of the facilities, through staff and/or volunteer organizations. Responsible for stand-by duties within the Community Services Department as scheduled which includes Recreation Centres, and Special Events.

What you will be doing

  • Responsible for programs and services oversight delivered through the assigned lines of business including, children, youth, camps, and inclusion.
  • Provides input to the departmental budget process and is responsible for assigned cost centers, forecasting and controlling expenditures in areas under direct control.
  • Responsible for general cleanliness and in conjunction with Facilities and Emergency Preparedness & Risk Management, at centes in which programming occurs.
  • Develops business cases with supporting justification to advance strategic interests such as staffing shortages, grant opportunities, and customer-friendly registration processes; initiate business practice reviews to identify efficiencies and prepare recommendations for Recreation Leadership Team.
  • Responsible for reporting facility maintenance issues and liaising with appropriate contractors.
  • Ensures employees and contractors work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations, and Corporate Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, and to take every reasonable precaution to protect the workers.
  • Assures compliance and documentation as applicable to regulations and standard operating procedures. Takes a leading role in the development, training and implementation of new and existing Standard Operating Procedures and is responsible for quality control. Identifies training needs for field staff.
  • Provides consultative services to community organizations, offers assistance with board development, public relations and budgeting, to facilitate partnerships and effective/efficient programming. Liaises with government agencies, the media, and other job-related organizations.
  • Supervises, trains, coaches and evaluates all unionized, non-union, contract, and part-time staff, as well as volunteers within the portfolio. Provides leadership/direction to staff/volunteers to achieve effective/efficient operations for the area. Including responsibilities for: daily programs and services delivered through the Recreation Centres and is responsible for the planning and delivery of the camp program, inclusion and youth initiatives throughout the year.
  • Is a key participant in the recruitment of staff to support the programs and services within the portfolio. Responsible for staff supervision, scheduling, discipline, evaluating and responds to grievances.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the collective bargaining agreement and a working knowledge of the collective bargaining process.

Education

University degree in Recreation or a related field, First aid, C.P.R. and A.E.D., High Five (PHCD/Q2)

Knowledge of applicable legislation, codes and regulations, i.e. Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations, Ministry of Health.

Experience and Knowledge

3-4 years of experience working in the field of children, youth and inclusion programming

Creating and implementing budgets.

Staff management including union, non-union and contractors.

Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness Training Certificate from the Ministry of Labour (may be obtained post offer)
Valid G driver's license.
Current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.

Your compensation

This position is within Class 5 of the Non-Union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $94,039 - $114,678. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.

Hours of work

Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (35 hours per week).
