Youth Substance Use Worker

35 hours/week

Job Summary:

Based in Hope B.C. this position will work in conjunction with the various CEDAR STRONG PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION SOCIETY youth serving programs and with the Adult Substance Use position. As well working with community partners to identify youth at-risk of substance misuse or impacted by other’s substance misuse. Work with youth and/or their families/caregivers regarding drug prevention and intervention strategies. The Youth Worker provides prevention, intervention and community development in an attempt to reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug problems within the community.

KEY DUTES & RESPONSIBILTIES:

· Meet youth in their environment and provide support and information on substance use, harm reduction, services and options in a non-judgmental an un-intrusive way.

· Working with youth up to the age of 24, youth who are transitioning into adult services will have collaborative practice between youth and adult services

· Provide one-on-one support to youth in multiple settings and different environments

· Assesses individuals and families. Refers youth and families to other services, treatment programs, support groups, etc., as necessary.

· Work with MCFD and/or CYMH as needed on meeting the client needs.

· Develops and implements support groups and/or group activities dealing with life skills, problem solving, coping mechanisms, family and peer relationships, education, and awareness regarding substance abuse.

· Works with other professionals and the youth to develop a care plan that will help ensure success for youth.

· Act as an advocate and liaison with other professionals in the community.

· Develops and implements ongoing, evaluation procedures for implemented prevention and intervention

Education:

Addictions Certificate, counseling or a related field, or the equivalent education and experience. Drug and alcohol training is required.

Experience & Training:

At least one year’s relevant work experience. Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs and related provincial and community support services systems. Trauma Resilient Informed Practice training and Indigenous Cultural Humility Training.

Physical Demands:

Relationships are formed easier with youth through physical activities, it is important that the worker be physically fit and can engage in various sports and activities with the youth.

Working Conditions:

Hours of work are 35 per week and will be determined by the Program Manager some of which may be conducted outside of normal office hours.

Mental Demands:

· The job involves psychological and mental demands in relation to working with individuals who have alcohol and drug abuse issues and other related social issues. The ability to adapt to unforeseen situations throughout the day.

· The job involves verbal and written communication within the staff team and with local agencies. Ability to document and relay information in a concise and efficient manner.

· The job involves ethical thinking and making sound judgments. Respectful toward individuals regardless of ethnic, religious, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, age, physical or mental ability. Ability to problem-solve, demonstrate time, organizational, and stress management skills.

· All Staff will possess Emotional Competences.

Ability to pass and maintain security clearance. This job will require a flexible schedule to meet the needs of clients and the community.

This position is full time 35 hours P/week

Salary - $27.54 /hour
