The Role
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Library Branch Services, or designate, performs a variety of tasks related to basic circulation functions and keeping the library collections in order.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Shelves library materials ensuring accuracy in accordance with the Dewey Decimal Classification System and other library shelving systems.
  • Circulates library material (e.g., books, periodicals, audio/visual material) in and out of the library; reserves materials; registers library members; receives fines and other charges using circulation software. Contacts library members to notify them of reserves or overdue materials.
  • Checks in, receives, cleans, and makes minor repairs to library materials. Notifies supervisor of worn or damaged materials.
  • Assists other library staff int the preparation of displays, programs, and special events (e.g., book sales, author visits).
  • Under the direction of supervisor, assists library members to find answers to information requests or library materials using both print and digital library resources.
  • Requests material not available in branch and fills requests from other branches. Assists members and the public with library technology (e.g., library catalogue, ebooks, eaudiobooks); assists with basic troubleshooting on devices which use library technologies.
  • Works in a standard library setting or Library Headquarters. Range of movement (bending, reaching) is required when shelving materials.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be currently enrolled in school and at least 15 years of age.
  • Ability to work shifts during regular library hours including evenings and weekends.
  • General knowledge of library resources and library operations normally acquired through personal library use, volunteering or working in a public, school or special library.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and knowledge of current computer technology and software such as Microsoft Office, the Internet, and a variety of digital resources.
  • Ability to troubleshoot personal computer hardware and software.
  • Customer service skills, acquired through volunteer or work experience.
  • Ability to support Library services through creativity, innovation and responsiveness to change.
  • Communication skills to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds (in person, phone, email) using correct spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions, as well as communicate clearly to library staff in verbal, written and electronic form.
  • Ability to maintain and foster courteous and cooperative working relationships with library staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of library user information.
  • Time management skills to prioritize tasks to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
