Boulevard customers are extremely passionate about what they do, and their needs can be incredibly nuanced and critical. They rely on us to stand alongside them, so they can focus on what they do best. As a Staff Engineer on the Commerce team, you will help meet the needs of our customers by delivering high-quality systems and collaborating closely with Product and Design. Commerce powers the foundational components of the Boulevard platform including Order, Checkout, Memberships, Payment primitives, etc., requiring meeting the accounting integrity standards. This is a highly visible role in a space that is extremely important for our customers, and mission critical for the business.

The ideal candidate will be customer-centric with a proven track record of architecting and building the Commerce platform at scale. Your commitment to the customer experience and strong ownership of the quality and integrity of your code and systems sets high engineering standards. Working closely with Engineering, Product Management, Design, and Product Marketing, you will be crucial in shaping requirements and delivering meaningful product features. Your dedication to developing reliable, scalable, performant, and maintainable systems goes hand in hand with creating a strong technical foundation for the team to build upon.

Key Responsibilities

• Take ownership of high-impact technical projects across the Commerce Platform, from design through production
• Collaborate cross-functionally with teams to define technical requirements and ship features that directly impact customers
• Contribute to the design and scalability of Boulevard’s Commerce platform ensuring accounting and operational correctness
• Establish and monitor system health metrics, implementing strategies to exceed targets
• Champion the maintenance of an observable, secure, and efficient codebase, addressing technical debt proactively to ensure the platform’s reliability and performance
• Participate in on-call rotation, where you will lead the incident investigation, resolution and identifying post-incident improvements

What you’ll need to thrive

Experience

• • Experience designing, building and scaling Commerce and Accounting products
  • Experience shipping high-impact and complex user-facing initiatives
  • Strong proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java, Go) - Experience in Elixir is a plus
  • Deep understanding of backend system design, APIs and data modeling for financial systems

CS Foundations: Ability to make sound decisions and tradeoffs in design and implementation, appropriately anticipating scale, maintenance, and overall operational feasibility of solutions.

Strong Communicator: Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. You know your audience and can communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.

Collaborative: Deep partnership with your product, design, and marketing counterparts, constantly collaborating to ensure we progress towards the desired outcomes, maintaining healthy engagement with peers and stakeholders across R&D for cross-functional initiatives.

Ownership: Able to independently drive complex initiatives and incrementally deliver value in partnership with Product and Design. 

Autonomy: Ability to move things forward in the face of ambiguity, operating effectively in decision-making while clearly articulating risks, trade-offs, and ensuring proper visibility to key stakeholders and the squad.

Technical & Leadership Skills: You provide technical direction on projects, mentor others through code reviews and design input, and elevate the team’s technical bar. 

Forward Thinker: Demonstrated ability to evolve systems thoughtfully for future scale while still delivering incremental value in the now.
