Simulated Patient Educator


Primary Purpose: The Simulated Patient Educator (SPE) will provide supervision and educational training to Simulated Patients (SPs), Healthcare Professionals (HPs) and Teaching Associates (TAs) for the various curricular sessions supported in Regina. The SPE will work both independently and as a team member to support the needs of the unit and develop collaborative relationships with the Regina Campus staff. The SPP is composed of both Simulated Patients (SP), Health Care Professionals, and Volunteer patients.

Nature of the Work: The SP Educator will report to the Manager of the Regina Campus and have day to day direction from the SP Coordinator and the Administrative Coordinators. This position will assist with the promotion, development, and coordination of the Simulated Patient Program (SPP). The SPE will be working in a simulated health care environment, which requires working collaboratively with CLRC partners and interdisciplinary teams in the development and delivery of their courses or academic sessions. The SPE will assist with the development of cases, recruitment and training of the SPs, TAs and Volunteers as required for various academic sessions.

The SP Educator will play an active role in the planning and delivery of Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) for several Health Science programs and external licensing bodies. The SPE will assist with the recruitment, on-boarding and training of new SPs, MDs and Non-MDs, and Volunteers.

The practices in the SP Program are supported by the Association of Standardized Patient Educators

(ASPE) Standards of Practice. The incumbent will work closely with the following: SPE Coordinators in

Regina and at the CLRC, other SP Educators, Simulation Education and Operations Specialists, and Simulation Technicians, faculty, students, community members and internal and external event sponsors. This complex position may experience constant interruptions, changing priorities, strict deadlines, multiple competing demands, addressing multiple complex issues, and possible moderate/heavy physical labor. This is a full-time day position that may require some flexibility in hours under the ASPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Supervision and Education of Simulated Patients (SPs), Medical (MDs) and Healthcare Professionals (HPs) and Teaching Associates (TAs):

  • Recruitment and training of SPs/MDs/HPs/TAs for Medical undergraduate and postgraduate courses and exams, and external partner academic sessions
  • Contribute to a safe working environment for SPs/MDs/HPs/TAs by following the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practice
  • Interact collaboratively with internal and external partners in the delivery of academic sessions
  • Assist with the organization of SP recruitment

SP Educator: Updated July 2025

  • Supervise SPs during the health sciences undergraduate and graduate courses and exams, professional licensing exams, and external programs
  • Set up and clean-up of rooms for exams and academic sessions with materials per the curriculum case material
  • Support Coordinators with the set-up of equipment from the Dilawri Simulation Center
  • Identify and train SP’s to be exam invigilators, ensure they have access to up-to-date versions of the UGME COM Exam Invigilation Manual is kept current to related policies to exam protocols and procedures for the Regina Campus

Session Management: In collaboration with the SPE Coordinator, Regina and partners at the CLRC, Saskatoon:

  • Plans, coordinates, executes, and evaluates academic sessions that support the USask Health Sciences strategic goals and objectives, using strong administrative and critical thinking skills
  • Assist with the creation of marketing and educational strategies and materials to promote the Simulated Patient Program (SPP) to various health science colleges, faculty and external partners
  • Develop strategies for ongoing SPP development and recruitment to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Assist with the development of policy and procedure, orientation and training manuals and videos for the SPP
  • Assist with the development and training of Teaching Associates for Sensitive Exams and Ultrasound
  • Communicate effectively with other members of the CLRC team and USask Health Sciences, faculty, staff and students from the programs the CLRC supports, and other stakeholders
  • Participate in program performance evaluation to identify areas for future growth and direction
  • Keep apprised of current standards and practices across Canada and internationally, as well as in accordance with ASPE recommendations for Simulated Patient Programs

Qualifications

Education: Post-secondary degree in Education, Health Sciences field, Communications, Kinesiology or related field is required.

Experience: 1-3 years of education or training experience; working in the Health Care or Customer Service industry or other experiences that require exceptional interpersonal skills is desired. Health care related experience is an asset. Demonstrated experience with scheduling, recruitment, and planning as well as managing multiple projects is essential. Experience with professional licensing exams is helpful. In addition, experience with health science students' education, acting or theatre is beneficial.

Skills: Proficiencies in scheduling, planning, and coordinating complex academic sessions; highly developed organizational skills; strong communication and interpersonal skills; team building and collaborative relationship building skills; demonstrated ability in customer service skills; strong interest in learning skills on the job, educational teaching or training skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with others; flexibility to meet changing timelines, needs and requirements of programs. Basic Microsoft word and excel capabilities for database maintenance. Physical ability to perform light to moderate labor.
