Reporting to the Supervisor - Road Operations & Maintenance through the Working Foreperson, the Seasonal Labourer - Roads will assist with ongoing maintenance of Town owned roads.Job Duties Include
The following responsibilities and duties of this position includes but is not limited to:
Safe and responsible operation of all Town vehicles and equipment
Assists with road maintenance, sign maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, asphalt patching, roadside protection repair, sidewalk repair, pavement marking maintenance, picking and removal of litter and Illegal dumping from roadsides
Ensures the safe and efficient operation of departmental equipment including operating such equipment as; various stake trucks with and without attachments, 5 Tonne single axle dump truck with attachments, street and pathway sweepers, loaders and various tractors
Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner
Day to day interaction with the public
Qualifications/Skills
Minimum Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent
Nine (9) months of relevant experience performing road and infrastructure maintenance tasks such as: asphalt repairs, concrete repairs, sign maintenance and pavement markings
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Ability to work with limited supervision and as part of a team
Good time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties
Must be physically able to perform the duties of the job including heavy lifting and working in inclement weather for extended periods of time
Ability to understand the Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Class G driver's license in good standing and clear driver’s abstract is required
Class DZ driver’s license is considered an asset
Upon being hired, you will be required to provide a current criminal record check that is satisfactory to the Town of Ajax
What is Offered to Staff:
Rate of Pay : $25.05 - $28.14 per hour
Hours of Work : This is a unionized position that works a 40 hour work week in varying weather conditions. May be required to work a rotating shift, including days, evening and weekend shifts.
Duration of Employment : This seasonal position works up to 150 days from about April to the end of November each year and is based on the operational needs of the department.
Probationary Period : Seasonal Labourers are required to complete a six (6) month probationary period and if the probation is successful, then the Seasonal Labourer will be invited to return in subsequent seasons.
