About the Organization
UNCERTAIN-SEA (www.ofi.ca/tca-projects/uncertain-sea) associated with the Transforming Climate Action program (https://www.ofi.ca/programs/transform-climate-action), is a large multi-institution project with collaborators across Canada and the globe. The ocean’s carbon cycle plays a major role in controlling the level of CO2 in the atmosphere and, hence, Earth’s climate. It is also central to energy transfer within the ocean ecosystem. The UNCERTAIN-SEA project aims to improve the understanding and quantification of the exchanges, transformations, and pathways through which the oceanic carbon cycle and Earth’s climate system interact, both today as well as in the past. Focus is put on the connected polar and subpolar environments of the Northwest Atlantic, from Baffin Bay to the Scotian Shelf, which are major contributors to ocean carbon uptake and storage.

The project is structured around six research themes carried out by an inter-institutional group of researchers from Dalhousie, UQAR, Laval, and Memorial University. The themes will address major knowledge gaps and improve quantitative estimations of:
  • Terrestrial matter and freshwater fluxes and their impacts on ocean carbon uptake;
  • Carbon fluxes at the atmosphere ocean interface, including effects of ice-cover and extreme weather events;
  • Primary production and the different pathways of the biological carbon pump;
  • Carbon transfers across the benthic boundary layer, the benthos, and the sediment (burial);
  • The transport and storage of carbon within the water column with respect to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), and;
  • Uncertainties using observations, reanalysis and modeling.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigators (UNCERTAIN-SEA’s Work Package leads) at Dalhousie, the Research Coordinator will advance Dalhousie’s contributions to this project through project management and research coordination activities. This will include interactions between researchers and students from Dalhousie University, Laval University, Memorial University and University of Quebec at Rimouski

  • Planning and coordinating outreach and engagement activities.

Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines. Travel for research activities within Canada will be required, as will some flexibility with working hours to accommodate the demands of field work.
