BCIT’s Recreation Services department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Recreation Coordinator, Fitness and Wellness.This position is responsible for the development, implementation and operation of fitness and wellness programs offered at the institute and for the operation of the fitness centres and activity rooms on the Burnaby and satellite campuses. As a member of the Recreation Services team, the Coordinator, Fitness and Wellness supports the overall development, delivery, and evaluation of recreation programs, services, and events that foster active and healthy living, social connection, campus community engagement, and student learning, development, and success. This position works closely with the Operations Coordinator and Coordinator, Programs and Intramurals on marketing the facility, supervising the Recreation Services Assistants and student staff, and participating as a member of the Recreation Services team.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Researches, implements, promotes, organizes and evaluates fitness and wellness activities including instructional courses fitness and exercise programs, personal training, clubs, groups and special events to meet the needs of a diverse group of student, staff and public customers with varying levels of skills and fitness.
- Supports the department’s strategic plan and continuous quality improvement to ensure the provision of relevant and high quality fitness and wellness programs and other services.
- Works collaboratively with campus groups and departments, such as the Student Association and Human Resources department, to develop and operate programs and promote participation, engagement, education and support for healthy and active lifestyles.
- Responsible for the administration, oversight and programs at the Fitness Centres and Activity Rooms at the Burnaby and satellite campuses, and for the daily supervision of the Burnaby recreation facilities centre; coordinates all aspects of the weight room, including programming.
- Leads in the recruitment and selection of fitness instructors and provides input to performance evaluations of employees and contracted staff.
- Ensures the Fitness Centres and Activity Rooms are maintained in safe and efficient operating condition at all times; ensures risk management and liability precautions are in place, and as an employee of the department, ensures the safe operation of all recreation centre facilities and services.
- Ensures patrons are using equipment in safe and correct manner; demonstrates correct use as needed and instructs other department staff what to be aware of when Coordinator, Fitness and Wellness is not on duty.
- Conducts regular safety and maintenance inspections of the recreation facilities including the Fitness Centres; reports and takes action on real or potential hazards.
- Develops and maintains policy and procedures manual for Fitness Centre and Activity Room operations including instructors, trainers and participants, and ensures information is reviewed and updated on a regular basis.
- Ensures department first aid equipment and supplies are sufficient and in proper order.
- Responsible for oversight of equipment and infrastructure at all Fitness Centres and Activity Rooms including inventory management, coordinating repairs and maintenance and ensuring completion in a timely manner. Liaises and coordinates with vendors and repair companies.
- Provides input to design and refurbishing of fitness centres and activity rooms. Stays current with industry trends and developments related to fitness and weight training equipment.
- Works with the Operations Coordinator on the purchase of new equipment. Researches new equipment options and provides recommendations on specifications to meet industry current standards and best practices.
- Provides leadership in customer service excellence and promotes friendly and positive relationships with all clientele.
- Prepares program information and schedules for distribution and, in conjunction with the institute’s marketing and communications department, contributes to the website, social media, print materials, special promotions, email and other communication channels to increase awareness of the services and programs offered.
- Loads course information in Active Networks; monitors and reports enrolment and participation statistics in collaboration with the Operations Coordinator; makes recommendations for increased participation and revenue opportunities.
- Supervises and provides functional direction to the Recreation Service Assistants, fitness and wellness course and program instructors, student staff, and volunteers.
- Develops and implements new revenue opportunities and promotes use of the recreation facilities and programs. Handles rental enquiries and customer relations, provides tours to potential rental customers, prepares costing and contracts, coordinates set-up, operation and tear-down.
- Assists the Operations Coordinator to develop annual budget and quarterly forecasts for fitness centres, wellness programs and instructional courses for consideration by the Director; determines financial viability of existing and new programs, and promotes revenue generation through cost effectiveness and innovation.
- Works with the Operations Coordinator to incorporate opportunities for student development and leadership into student staff and volunteer opportunities.
- Keeps current with industry trends relevant to the position.
- Provides back-up relief for other Recreation Coordinators during peak periods and absences and provides back-up to front desk employees breaks as required.
- As requested by the Operations Coordinator and Director, undertakes special projects relevant to the department and the division.
- Works outside of traditional work week schedules to supervise areas of responsibility, and ensures operational needs of the department are met on a consistent basis.
- Travels between BCIT campuses, and other recreation services or outside agencies, as required.
- Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
- Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.

- Diploma in recreation and leisure, physical education, sport management, or related field.
License(s)/Certifications(s):
- BCRPA Certification
- Level I First Aid and CPR, or the ability to obtain
Experience:
- Two years general experience plus two years practical current experience in the fitness field, including experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of diverse fitness and wellness programs and events, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
- MS Office knowledge with Word and Excel at the intermediate level
- Experience working with recreation participant and activity registration, payment and information systems (such as Active Networks)
- Proven knowledge and experience using the internet and the ability to use it as a research, communications and promotional tool
Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven ability to both participate successfully as a team member and to develop and lead effective teams
- Proven ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders and with diverse groups
- Excellent conflict resolution and problem solving skills
Administrative Skills (e.g. prioritizing, minute taking, wp speed, etc.):
- Keyboarding skills at 40 wpm
- Independent, self-starter with excellent organizational and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, and handle multiple priorities in a busy and demanding environment
Other Skills/Abilities:
- Proven supervision, customer service and quality assurance skills
- Ability to recognize and act to resolve problems and exercise independent judgment and initiative
- Demonstrated knowledge of influences on active living and physical activity behaviour especially as they relate to post-secondary student and campus communities
- Knowledge of student development and engagement as it relates to fitness and well-being
- Proven initiative, creativity, and skills for the planning, development and implementation of fitness and wellness instructional programs and special events
- Solid understanding of weight/fitness equipment and weight room/fitness centre operations
- Experience in a variety of fitness courses and knowledge of related best practices
- Thorough understanding of risk-management in the recreation setting
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel between the institute’s campuses, and offsite locations

Salary Range
Salary Grade 8: $62,669 - $68,082 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
