This is a Term position commencing as soon as possible - June 30, 2026.
The Reading Clinician (RC) functions as an expert in being able to identify areas of challenge in literacy. The Reading Clinician works collaboratively with school teams, parents and other Clinicians to provide a comprehensive range of services to students and teachers, including assessment intervention, consultation and collaboration.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct and interpret educational assessments of students who exhibit language and literacy delays for the purposes of providing recommendations and developing strategies.
- Provide information and supports for developing student specific plans in the area of literacy. development.
- Consult with other clinicians in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of student specific outcomes on the student specific plan.
- Provide professional learning for teachers, parents and other professionals in reading disabilities and effective teaching and instruction practices.
- Maintain student records as per professional and ethical codes of practice.
- Ability to work and manage caseload independently and within an interdisciplinary team.
- Collaborate with teachers, principals, and larger clinical teams regarding inclusive educational programming and interventions, and classroom adaptations and accommodations.
- Provide direct intervention to students with reading disabilities and delays in literacy skills.
- Provide training to support staff on effective reading interventions and strategies. - Provide training, supervision and support to school teams in the implementation of literacy interventions. of language and communication programs.
- Provide direct intervention to students with complex reading disorders or literacy development delays.
- Provide training to school staff on the implementation and utilization of software and literacy/reading assistive technologies.
Consultation and Collaboration:
- Timely and effective consultation with school teams to identify, assess, intervene with students exhibiting delays in reading skill acquisition.
- Advocate for the student in order to maximize their potential related to learning and achievement, working toward positive change to improve inclusive education programming, e.g., student specific learning outcomes, curricular adaptations and modifications, classroom interventions and teaching strategies.
- Participate in continuing professional development to ensure practice is consistent with current trends in educational research and literature.
Assessment and Intervention:
- Assessment may include formal and informal testing, observations, surveys, file reviews, and interviews.
- Use of a variety of assessment tools and tests to determine deficits and gaps in literacy and academic functioning, as well as to evaluate and explain the possible factors impacting that functioning.
- Provide direct services to students and provide families with information and home-based interventions.
- Provide and share assessment reports with the school team and families. The report includes strategies and recommendations based on the assessment information to facilitate appropriate educational programming and improved student progress and achievement.
- Provide written materials and special materials to enhance student functioning.
Qualifications:
- Be eligible for the provisional school clinician certification through the Professional Certification Unit, Manitoba Education.
- Participate in the supervision requirements to obtain a permanent Professional School Clinician Certificate.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and effective organizational skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships and rapport with students, parents, school staff and community.
- Strong clinical skills and a broad knowledge base in literacy/reading disabilities, educational assessment, cognitive functioning, and learning disabilities.
- A valid driver's license and insured vehicle.
Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check will be required.
