The NPD Product Support Chemist is a key member of the New Product Development team, providing technical expertise to support internal teams and external customers. This role involves conducting tests on new and existing products, analyzing results, and contributing to the research and development of polymer materials and technologies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Completes research and development project tasks for developing new polymers and non-metallic materials under the technical direction and supervision of the NPD Manager or a senior team member, with coordination from the Product Champion/ Project Lead.
- Directly involved in activities for chemical synthesis and preparing polymer samples, polymerization scale-up up and technology transfer from NPD to production; takes part in troubleshooting activities for correcting the lab or plant setup.
- Plans, implements and performs experiments on characterizing the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of polymer materials and product candidates.
- Develops or assists with creating test plans and procedures documents; conducts detailed tests as part of the verification and validation process; makes recommendations for changes in product or test method as required.
- Record, analyze, and report numerical and graphical test data, ensuring alignment with design specifications and objectives.
- Prepare and maintain SDS in compliance with GHS, REACH, OSHA, WHMIS, and other global regulations.
- When required, performs or assists with assembly, installation, and commissioning activities for NPD prototypes that are being manufactured and/or field tested; may train personnel from other departments and distributors.
- Professionally interacts with Engineering, Global Service & Support, Quality Control, Production, Customer Service, Purchasing, and other departments to provide support to inquiries coming from customers or distributors in the field on new/existing materials.
- Use laboratory equipment for testing, analyze findings, and occasionally present results to internal teams.
- Participates in accomplishing other project tasks as assigned by the NPD Manager, the Senior Polymer Scientist (or an NPD Project Lead).
- Maintains the TBI proprietary information on products and manufacturing processes in the strictest confidence, ensuring that such information is not released to third parties without written consent from TBI.
- Possibility of travel on occasion to visit suppliers, present at conferences, or commission prototypes at shipyards or other locations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of College or University Education in Chemistry, Material Science or Chemical Engineering, graduating with a Sc. Degree.
- Minimum 5 years of work experience in a Chemist or Chemical Engineering position.
- Knowledge and working experience in polymer chemistry
- Hands-on experience in an experimental lab setting.
- Thordon Product knowledge is an asset.
- Knowledge and exposure to Project Management basics is preferable.
