Description

Reporting to Manager of Morningstar Centre, the prevention support worker attends to the admission, care and discharge of the clients throughout their recovery journey. The position assists through the stages of change and provides support services for effective care transition and discharge planning and functioning of the facility through group work and working across programs.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in addictions or social services is required although lesser academic qualifications may be accepted provided that the incumbent has completed or is willing to complete CAMH course work relevant to the program and clientele
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid
  • WHMIS training
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI)
  • Completion of support and assist course for medication is required upon hiring
  • Basic counselling and screening skills
  • Demonstrated ability to observe and record appropriately
  • Capable of maintaining cooperative working relationships and liaising with various other service providers
  • Ability to provide, resource referrals, and effectively advocate for clients
  • Crisis intervention skills and conflict resolution experience required to support clients
  • Effective critical thinking skills
  • Previous experience working with a vulnerable population
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience working within the context of recovery, harm reduction, therapeutic engagement, homelessness and trauma informed approach, as well as the stages of change and relapse
  • Effective interpersonal/communication skills, appropriate to dealing tactfully and sensitively with clients, staff and other professionals
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet client and operational needs
  • Ability to organize and manage routine and administrative tasks as outlined
  • Consistently utilizes a non-judgmental approach to prevention support work and interactions with internal and external stakeholders
  • Awareness of the community and district treatment resources and community partners providing social/health services to clients
  • Telephone etiquette
  • Knowledge of the Ojibway language and culture would be considered an asset
  • The ability to work as part of a peer supervision model
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Experience with and knowledge of harm reduction strategies
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision in a fast paced/multitask environment
  • Demonstrated proficient computer skills including MS Office Suite, Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
  • Class G driver's license with a clean drivers abstract
  • Demonstrated reliable attendance record
  • Previous experience working with vulnerable population in the Mental Health and Addictions Field an asset
  • Previous experience working in an abstinence and harm reduction environment an asset
