The Plant Operations Director will oversee the day-to-day management of three distinct material business units, including:
- Asphalt Plants in Acheson and Leduc
- Soil Cement Plant in Edmonton
- Ready-Mix Plant in Acheson
Reporting to the Manufacturing Manager, this role serves as a critical liaison between customers, employees, and the company, ensuring seamless operations across all units.
Key Responsibilities:
Health, Safety & Environment
- Drive safety performance across all business units by leading indicator safety metrics.
- Implement and manage the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) program, ensuring compliance with all applicable policies and regulations.
- Collaborate with leadership and project teams to achieve HSE goals, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Team Leadership
- Uphold company values while leading and engaging a team through clear communication and employee development initiatives.
- Manage workforce planning and foster strong union and cross-functional relationships to promote a collaborative and ethical work environment.
Employee Development & Coaching
- Enhance overall team performance through talent management, succession planning, and targeted training initiatives.
- Identify key roles, address skill gaps, and communicate goals and corrective actions effectively.
Plant Operations Management
- Develop and oversee production and maintenance strategies to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) and optimize plant performance.
- Manage daily operations, focusing on quality control, inventory management, and cross-functional coordination to ensure alignment with business objectives.
Maintenance Management
- Coordinate with Business Unit Superintendents to plan and execute preventive, predictive, and proactive maintenance for plant equipment.
- Develop maintenance schedules, manage major repairs, and conduct regular inspections to ensure optimal equipment performance and facility upkeep.
Financial & Risk Management
- Support the Sales and Manufacturing teams in quoting, budgeting, and forecasting to ensure effective cost control and business planning.
- Monitor performance metrics, including accounts receivables/payables and inventory, in accordance with company guidelines to identify improvement opportunities.
Business Development & Customer Relations Management
- Engage with the Sales team to explore bid opportunities and support new business pursuits within existing accounts and local markets.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure smooth delivery of products and services while preparing proposals, negotiating deals, and analyzing market trends for continuous improvement.
Experience and Knowledge Required for the Role:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in a supervisory or management role within the construction materials industry, with a proven track record of leading and managing teams effectively.
- Extensive technical knowledge of asphalt and concrete equipment and processes, with hands-on experience in plant operations.
- Demonstrated experience in optimizing plant performance and achieving production targets through effective team leadership and operational management.
- Proficient in software applications such as Command Alkon, MINDS, MS Office, and JDE, with the ability to leverage technology for operational improvements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse teams.
- Proven ability to work independently while effectively managing responsibilities and driving team performance in a fast-paced environment.
- Ideal candidates will have prior experience in fostering a collaborative and ethical work culture, with a commitment to employee development and safety.
Working Conditions:
