About the Position:
The Municipality of Brockton invites qualified applicants for the part-time position of Cemetery Attendant. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position is responsible for burials and providing upkeep and maintenance of the Walkerton and Starkvale Cemetery’s.
This position will start as part-time in 2025 to support operational needs, with the potential to transition to full-time hours from April to November 2026. From November to April, the role will shift to casual hours, based on operational requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Locates, marks and assist with digging burial plots.
- Marks graves for foundations and foot markers.
- Dresses grave site, hauls away excess earth to holding area, cribs grave and helps install vault.
- Removes sod, digs grave, fills in grave, packs soil, and replaces sod and places flowers and marker.
- Liaises with Municipal Office concerning plot locations and burials.
- Raises and replaces sunken markers.
- Repairs upright grave markers.
- Power washes monuments.
- Cuts and trims grass.
- Water trees
- Trims hedges and bushes and cuts dead branches.
- Fills in sunken areas, re seeds and fertilizes.
- Operates and maintains tools, equipment and machinery in accordance with established health and safety policies and procedures.
Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills Required:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Possess or willingness to obtain and maintain professional development courses, workshops, certificates or designations is an asset.
- Minimum of 1-3 years related experience in cemetery operations and maintenance, related equipment and operations.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Excellent Communication (written, oral and interpersonal) skills.
- Superior Customer Service skills.
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously in all aspects of the position, including diplomacy, tact, discretion and good judgement.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office (outlook, word, excel) applications.
- Knowledge of legislation and best practices as it relates to the operation of cemetery operations.
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
- Knowledge of W.H.M.I.S.
- Basic knowledge and skills in landscaping
- Possess a valid First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate.
- Possess a valid Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing.

What we offer you:
- Hourly rate between $29.01 - $33.95 depending on qualifications and experience.
- Part-time hours up to 37.5 hours per week. Typical hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 4:30 pm.
