As a Network Technologist, you’ll be an integral part of our Network Operations team, helping to ensure the reliable delivery of ORBCOMM’s IoT solutions to our global customer base. You’ll gain exposure to a wide range of technologies—including satellite systems, RF performance, Linux scripting, and network infrastructure—while contributing to mission-critical projects.
With a flexible hybrid work schedule, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—engaging in-person collaboration at our Ottawa office, while also benefiting from the autonomy and comfort of remote work. This role will be working 3+ days in-office per week at our Ottawa, ON office.
What You’ll Do:
Network operations and earth station support
- Monitor and troubleshoot satellite and IoT services using tools like Grafana, NMS, and proprietary platforms.
- Act as part of a 24/7 second-line support team, rotating after-hours coverage with other team members.
- Maintain ground/earth station equipment globally—performing remote support and occasional onsite visits.
- Conduct RF signal testing and analysis (L-Band, C-Band, and IF) using spectrum analyzers and other tools.
- Install RF hardware such as converters, RF cables, GPS antennas, and COTS equipment.
Networking and systems support
- Troubleshoot basic network connectivity issues (switches, routers, serial appliances)
- Install and configure Linux on production servers; load applications based on engineering guidance.
- Develop Linux scripts/tools to extract and analyze RF and system performance data.
Database and quality monitoring
- Run MySQL (MariaDB) queries and serve as point of contact for third-party database support.
- Optimize and troubleshoot database performance issues.
- Maintain and monitor a large fleet of satellite terminals tracking latency, C/No, and availability metrics.
- Manage the local satellite monitoring lab in Carp, Ontario—including terminal setup, cable builds, and IP configuration.
Engineering and infrastructure support
- Support internal engineering and lab teams with local RF installations and setups.
- Implement and maintain RF distribution infrastructure within the Kanata office.
- Build custom power and interface cables to support equipment connectivity.
Who You Are:
You’re a hands-on technical professional who’s passionate about RF systems, networks, and satellite communication. If you have:
- 3-5 years of relevant experience in networking, RF systems, or IoT-based technical operations.
- A diploma or degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Systems, or related field.
- Strong working knowledge of Linux and scripting (Bash, Python preferred).
- Hands-on experience with RF testing tools such as spectrum analyzers and signal generators.
- Basic understanding of IP networking and troubleshooting connectivity.
- Experience with MySQL databases and writing SQL queries.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication and analytical problem-solving skills.
- A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel up to 10%.
