The Mechanical Manager will provide leadership and guidance to mechanical staff responsible for repairing and servicing Cando’s fleet of locomotives and trackmobiles. This role focuses on developing team capabilities, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement, and ensuring high standards of performance and reliability across all maintenance activities. The Mechanical Manager will also support after-hours emergencies as needed and oversee railcar maintenance and inspections. The position may require travel away from home for extended periods to support field operations and enhance knowledge.
Roles & Responsibilities
Planning & Service Delivery
- Develop and implement strategies to grow internal and external service/repair clientele
- Manage relationships with customers, service partners, contractors, shippers, and industry contacts
- Coordinate divisional operations and align service delivery with user needs
- Plan and mobilize personnel and equipment to meet operational schedules
- Maintain tools, equipment, and material standards; schedule required maintenance and repairs
- Ensure service delivery aligns with the division’s goals and quality expectations
- Foster strong customer service and employee relations
- Manage mechanical asset and employee budgets
- Manage and oversee mechanical material needs and budgets
Leadership & Employee Development
- Promote and maintain a positive, team-oriented culture
- Mentor and guide employees on delivering high-quality services
- Promote and enforce compliance with Cando safety policies and procedures
- Identify risks, address inconsistencies, and align services to operational needs
- Oversee training and development initiatives specific to the division
Supervision & Administration
- Supervise all mechanical operational aspects, ensuring sufficient personnel, tools, and materials are available
- Provide field and shop supervision, assigning work and offering technical guidance
- Oversee safety management systems (SMS) and policy implementation
- Manage HR responsibilities including hiring, coaching, scheduling, payroll tracking, and purchasing
- Involve team members in planning, policy updates, and project decisions
Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities
- Strong planning and organizational skills in dynamic work environments
- Demonstrated leadership abilities including motivation, focus, and team empowerment
- Knowledge of shop operations, safety legislation, and employee relations best practices
- Familiarity with AAR/FRA/Transport Canada regulations and certifications
- Understanding of purchasing, inventory control, and basic accounting
- Proficient in health & safety standards and WSIB compliance
- Ability to obtain and maintain required qualifications and Safety Critical Medical clearances, including passing Customer and Cando drug and alcohol screening including pre-employment, post incident, and reasonable grounds testing
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Proficient mastery of both oral and written communications in English
- Must be able to hold and maintain an Ontario class DZ drivers’ license or equivalent
Education & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of leadership/supervisory experience in a mechanical or rail environment
- Minimum 10 years of experience in locomotive electrical and mechanical maintenance (railcar experience considered an asset)
- Experience working in heavy industrial environments with similar equipment
- Demonstrated ability to manage operations within a 24/7/365 framework
- Hold and maintain a valid class G driver’s license
- Forklift license would be considered an asset
