The mandate of the Department of Environment and Climate Change is to manage land, water, air, wildlife, and forests. This includes promoting, planning, and supporting the wise and sustainable use of natural resources, and protecting, restoring, and stewarding the environment for the social and economic benefit of all Northwest Territories residents.
Job Information
In this role, you will provide a senior level of professional and technical expertise to senior management, industry, other federal and territorial government departments, First Nations, and communities with respect to:
- the screening of development proposals;
- the conduct of comprehensive studies;
- the assessment of potential threats and recommended mitigation measures;
- identifying further engineering, hydrological or environmental studies.
This position manages staff input into the water licensing and where applicable, the environmental assessment process. At each stage of these processes, the incumbent approves detailed scientific reviews for submission to co-management boards, as well as other federal and territorial agencies. In addition, the incumbent represents the department through participation in public review panels and forums established under the appropriate legislation. On an-ongoing basis, the work involves providing authoritative advice on broad resource management and related environmental issues, including policies and guidelines, to departmental managers, industry, First Nations and community groups. In addition, the incumbent provides technical advice as the department's representative on panels, working groups and committees.
Typically attained by:
A master's degree in geography, environmental or resource management, or interdisciplinary environmental sciences and at least five (5) years' experience in environmental management, planning and/or program delivery, preferably in an NWT setting with both government and private industry. One year of supervisory experience is required.
Equivalencies include:
- A bachelor's degree in geography, environmental or resource management, or interdisciplinary environmental sciences and at least seven (7) years' experience in environmental management, planning and/or program delivery, preferably in an NWT setting with both government and private industry. One year of supervisory experience is required.
- A diploma in geography, environmental or resource management, or interdisciplinary environmental sciences and at least nine (9) years' experience in environmental management, planning and/or program delivery, preferably in an NWT setting with both government and private industry. One year of supervisory experience is required
