About the role
The Investment Risk team plays a critical role in developing, expanding and implementing the risk management function at OPTrust. Acting as a second line of defense, the team measures, monitors and assesses all investments through the lenses of funding, market, liquidity, concentration, counterparty credit, and ESG risks. The team works closely and collaboratively with the Investment Division to provide risk management advisory and support for OPTrust, while maintaining the independence necessary to fulfill its oversight mandate.
The Manager, Private Markets Investment Risk will be responsible for performing and expanding advanced quantitative and qualitative analysis and research to critically evaluate investment risks of OPTrust’s private market portfolios, including Real Estate, Private Equity, and Infrastructure.
What you’ll do
Deal & Portfolio Analysis
- Independently, collaboratively and methodically assess investment risk with respect to private market deals.
- Monitor private market investment portfolios and report on the various allocation and risk guidelines defined according to existing policies.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of fundamental analysis, quantitative analysis, and relevant knowledge of quantitative finance in an investment and pension fund context.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of investment processes, methods and approaches for processing and manipulating large datasets, and ability to interpret relevant statistical results.
- Design and prepare regular and ad-hoc risk reports.
- Draft and review Risk Opinion Memos for certain Private Market transactions.
Research Initiatives & Process Enhancement
- Stay abreast of current events, topics and industry best practices and raising issues and ideas with peers and team leaders when relevant.
- Review, assess, and recommend improvements to existing processes and governance frameworks.
- Document processes and procedures.
Coordination & Communication
- Work closely with Investment Risk colleagues to ensure that risk is appropriately assessed within the risk system for all new and existing Private Market investments.
- Interact with the Private Equity, Infrastructure, and Real Estate Group investment teams to model cash flows, evaluate transactions and assess the risk factors driving portfolio values.
- Act as a contact person for Private Equity, Infrastructure, and Real Estate deal teams.
- Work collaboratively with other risk functions to manage projects and maintain effective communications across the Investment Risk team.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Act as a resource for information and insight regarding private market related risk matters.
- Provide guidance, oversight and technical expertise to Analysts and Senior Analysts and assist with work/project management, as needed.
- Assist in periodic reviews of risk processes, risk-related policies, and the risk governance and oversight framework, as needed.
- Assist with work assignments, workload management, and feedback and performance reviews for Analysts and Senior Analysts, as needed.
- Support team staffing initiatives, including recruiting, conducting interviews and assessing candidates.
- Assisting with staff training as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What you bring
- 5+ years of experience with financial modeling, due diligence and/or valuations.
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in Finance or other relevant discipline.
- Attainment of a professional designation such as FRM, PRM, CFA, CAIA.
- Strong business acumen to understand driving factors of businesses in a typical Private Equity, Infrastructure and Real Estate portfolio.
- Ability to effectively communicate complex analysis in an easy-to-understand manner.
- Strong writing and presentation skills to compose Memorandums and Presentations for the Investment Risk Team and other stakeholders in the organization.
- Aptitude to work co-operatively and efficiently with other teams within the organization including investment deal teams.
- Ability to analyze financial market data using Excel, VBA, relevant analytical software, database and programming languages is an asset.
- Relevant risk management and/or investment experience in private markets, either with an asset manager, pension plan, bank, accounting firm, or investment consulting firm would be an asset.
- Experience with broad range of investments is considered an asset.
- Prior experience with RiskMetrics is an asset.
- Experience with people management would be considered an asset.
