POSITION TITLE – In-Person Program Instructor
LOCATIONS - Dartmouth (Woodlawn)
PROVIDE REPORTING TO – Halifax Learning Program Support Staff

Position Summary:
This position is responsible for delivering Halifax Learning’s literacy programs to individuals or groups of students in a classroom environment.
Principal Responsibilities:
Teaching
● Teach programs as defined by the needs and composition of the student group.
● Prepare a lesson plan prior to each class.
● Prepare all materials and supplies that are required for each session and each class.
● Complete daily reports on student progress.
● Review and comment on student writing assignments.
Behaviour management
● Manage relations between the students in the classroom, mediate and resolve any issues or difficulties and create a cohesive learning environment in which every student participates and feels comfortable.
Parent communication
● Communicate with parents for a quick class recap after each class and review homework in person or via email.
● Direct parents to contact a program support person for more in-depth information.
● Remind families of class cancellations and reschedule classes as needed according to Halifax Learning policies.
Administrative
● Make use of biweekly support to review student progress and address any questions or concerns.
● Attend professional development opportunities as they arise.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position does not have any direct supervisory responsibility.
Authority:
Advance students through Halifax Learning’s literacy programs based on their assessment of student progress.
Position Requirements:
Education and Training: Completion of a related post-secondary program. BEd is preferred, though Health Professions, Social Sciences, and Psychology will be considered an asset.
Prior teaching/ training and/or coaching experience is required.
Must live within HRM, ideally in Dartmouth.
Skills and Knowledge:
Excellent and efficient reading, writing and spelling skills must be demonstrated.
Excellent verbal communication skills and instructing ability.
Excellent auditory processing and phonological skills - assessed prior to interview.
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to relate to persons of all ages and backgrounds in an equal manner.
Ability to maintain and deal with sensitive and confidential situations with professionalism
A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle
Up-to-date child abuse registry and criminal records check
Up-to-date First Aid & CPR/AED level C (Blended)
Position Specifications:
Hours of work: Part-time, between 1 to 6:45 pm, Monday to Thursday.
Term: Permanent
Rate of pay: $20 per hour (12-20 hours weekly)
Probationary period: To be reviewed after 3 months of employment/ after completion of online training.
