As the Leader of Traffic Control and Parking, you will develop the policy, standard and short to medium-term strategy for Calgary Mobility Traffic Control and Parking while leading a team who are responsible for design of permanent traffic control signage and pavement marking. You will be an APEGA Responsible Member for traffic control design and will provide professional authentication of drawings produced by the team. You will establish best practices in traffic operations, develop and amend City of Calgary policies, Traffic Control Manuals, Traffic Bylaw, Street Bylaw, Parking Bylaw, Land Use Bylaw and regulations, and prepare and monitor operating budgets. Primary duties include:

  • Provide oversight of engineering work including ensuring design standards are maintained and adhered to by engineering and technical staff.
  • Respond to council, internal and public inquiries, respond to emails, letters, and memos from all interested parties and respond to 311 inquiries.
  • Administer the capital and operating budgets for lifecycle planning and daily operations.
  • Liaise with Calgary Parking in relation to on street parking, including approving location and installation of on street parking signage and devices
  • APEGA Responsible Member Authentication of permanent traffic control and parking designs, including signage, guide signs, and pavement marking, and review third-party projects from internal business units, and external developers to plan, design and implement traffic control systems.
  • Lead, supervise, recruit, hire, train, mentor and performance management of staff.
  • As the registered Responsible Member overseeing Traffic Control and Parking at the City of Calgary, you may be required to represent the City in litigation related to this discipline.
Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil Engineering.
  • You must have at least 5 years of experience in relevant traffic and transportation engineering, obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work Click here for more details.
  • A strong understanding of Traffic engineering principles, the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCDC) guidelines and general traffic operation standards, including service and capacity analysis, traffic safety considerations, and Traffic impact analysis is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • Familiarity with provincial legislation, regulation, and standards as they pertain to traffic engineering and operations is desired.
  • Experience with traffic modelling software and ArcGIS would be considered an asset.

  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
