Rooks to Cooks is Canada's leading culinary school for children. We run a wide variety of programming from in-home birthday parties, afterschool programs, community workshops and more, but are most known for our summer cooking day camps.
We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Kitchen Assistants to join our team for the upcoming camp season.
This is a full-time summer contract working 40+ hours per week for the duration of the summer, from the beginning of July to the end of August.
Reporting to the Sous Chef the kitchen assistant will be an integral part of our team to assist our campers have a fun summer! As Sous Chef, you will be working directly under our Sous Chef and assist in managing the back of house duties such as mise en place prep, dishwashing and cleaning, inventory management, and more.. A full list of the responsibilities is below:
Dish Pit/Space Cleanliness Manager
- Wash, dry, and put away dishes
- Take the garbage out to the appropriate locations
- Sweep, mop floors, and clean the kitchen daily
- Assist with various aspects of the Friday night Pop up restaurant cleaning
- Execute and maintain cleanliness standards as prescribed by head office
Equipment, Mise En Place, and Inventory Supporter
- Assist with organizing inventory of food and supplies
- Ensure the fridge, freezers and pantry are organized and clean at all times
- Conduct mise en place preparation for campers
- Receive & put away inventory
- Check order forms and report discrepancies to sous
- Assist sous chef in the oversight and management of CITs and volunteers
Camper Supervisor and Supporter
- Support lead chef in building and maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment for campers and staff
- Supervise and support campers to ensure their safety
- Support camp counsellor with break time activities, games and exercises as outlined in the camp counselor manual
- Help define and reinforce camp rules and expectations
Assist with Recipe Finishing
- Utilize the ovens and stove tops to finish camper recipes
- Ensure recipes are finished according to the curriculum packages provided by head office
- Monitor and help execute the cooking processes of daily recipes
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications / Experience
- 16 years old or older
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- 1+ years of experience working in the culinary industry
- 1+ years of dishwashing experience
- All employees will be required to obtain and demonstrate proof of completion of the following documents before the start date of their training and employment: First Aid & CPR, Food Handlers Certification and a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening
