Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Park and Natural Heritage Planning, the successful candidate will work in both the office and field, as well as remotely, to assist the Park and Natural Heritage Planning Section with administration of the City’s Tree Preservation By-law and review and inspection of development applications.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • With respect to the Tree Preservation By-law, the Intern will be responsible for logging and tracking permit applications, conducting inspections, and assisting residents with the application process.
  • To assist with the processing of development applications, the successful applicant will review submission material including Grading Plans, Arborist Reports, and Landscape Plans to confirm revisions and conduct inspections to verify installation of tree protection measures and required landscaping.
  • The intern will also assist the section with file and database management, coordination of public engagement activities, analysis of public survey data, and benchmarking or other on-going project-specific research.
  • Shadow multiple City positions and train in a variety of tasks.
  • Answer phone inquiries, direct calls, and provide basic information; oversee mail deliveries, packages, and couriers.
  • Perform clerical duties, take memos, maintain files, organize documents; photocopy, fax, etc. as needed.
  • Assist in preparing information and research materials; create and maintain PowerPoint presentations.
  • Take notes and memos during meetings; type documents, drafts, and reports; sort and manage files.
  • Run general City related errands.
  • Manage databases and input information, data, and records.
  • Research and gather documentation related to the divisional function.
  • Set up, break down, organize, and maintain conference rooms, training rooms, and meeting rooms; update and manage outlook calendars.
  • Attend City committee and events.

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a college or university program working towards a university degree in landscape architecture, arboriculture/forestry, environmental science, geography, planning or similar discipline.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification would be considered an asset.

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Ability to accurately identify tree / plant species and undertake basic assessments of plant health and condition
  • Understanding of Ontario environmental and planning legislation
  • Experience conducting site investigations and collecting data
  • Knowledge of municipal government processes and organization
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and the ability to prioritize are a requirement.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • The successful candidate should be an enthusiastic and creative team player.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholder groups.

  • Comfortable working outside (fieldwork).
  • Attention to detail
  • Possess your own CSA certified steel toe safety boots for fieldwork.
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license.
  • Provide own transportation to conduct field monitoring activities (mileage compensated).
