North Slave Métis Alliance (NSMA) is an Indigenous organization that represents s.35 Aboriginal rights-bearing Indigenous Métis people of the Great Slave Lake area. Our mandate includes protection of our members' Aboriginal rights, environment, and cultural heritage.
We are hiring 1 full time staff to join our Lands & Culture Department as a Human-Environment Researcher. This individual will support the North Slave Métis Alliance in achieving their mandate through the development of a comprehensive geographic information (GIS) and traditional knowledge database. In addition, this individual will work alongside our Community Advisory Committee on key initiatives that prioritize community needs. This database will support our community members in managing land and water across our traditional territory.
Job Type: Full-time (37.5 hours/week Monday-Friday)
Location: Yellowknife, NWT Canada (in-person)
Compensation: $40-45/hour (dependent on candidate experience)
Start Date: August 1, 2025 (flexibility available)
Responsibilities:
- Manage NSMA’s internal archive and maintain record keeping
- Develop summary reports bringing western and traditional knowledge together (to co-produce knowledge)
- Actively contribute and participate in organizational meetings, training, and other functions (e.g., fieldwork)
- Coordinate and lead projects and administrative tasks (e.g., facilitating meetings, developing materials, taking meeting minutes, etc.)
- Locate and apply to various funding opportunities (writing and submitting funding applications)
- Manage various projects simultaneously from inception to completion, under the supervision of the Manager
- Monitor project progress and provide updates to management
- Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures throughout the project lifecycle
- Support Department Manager in planning and hosting community focused, culturally relevant events, such as on the land trips
- Support Department Manager in building a GIS database with open-source data and traditional knowledge
- Support Department Manager in conducting traditional knowledge mapping interviews with community members (transcribe, digitize, analyze)
Education:
- A bachelor's and/or master's degree in environmental science/studies, geography, history, land use planning, Indigenous law, Indigenous knowledge systems or similar.
- Basic understanding of the nature of Aboriginal rights in Canada and ongoing land claims negotiations in the NWT.
Qualifications:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Holds Class 5 driver’s license
- Proficiency in budget management (applying to funding, managing funds)
A successful candidate will hold:
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Advanced written and verbal communication. You hold the ability to transform highly technical information into plain language summaries
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict deadlines
- Ability to work well independently with initiative as well as collaborative in a team setting
Desirable Assets:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (environment, geography, social studies, etc.)
- Experience in engagement and consultation with Indigenous peoples
- Experience conducting oral history interviews
- Experience with Adobe Suite, mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS), qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVIVO).
- Willingness and ability to work on-the-land, often in remote locations alongside community members.
- Experience with social media platforms for the purpose of community outreach and engagement
- Previous experience in a Project Management role
