PURPOSE: Reporting to the Principal, the purpose of the Hul’q’umi’num’ Language & Culture Assistant position is to support delivering Hul’q’umi’num’ language and cultural education to students in partnership with the Language and Culture Teacher and classroom teachers. This is full-time term position for the 2025/2026 school year that works primarily at the school with minimal local travel required. A term renewal for this position is subject to funding & student enrollment.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: The position includes paid sick leave and the opportunity for paid training. Depending on experience and qualifications, the position has a starting salary of:
Work Experience - $23.94 to $25.39 per hour
Certificate - $26.42 to $28.02 per hour
Diploma - $29.74 to $31.54 per hour
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide leadership and guidance for the integration of Cowichan culture, values and the Hul’q’umi’num’ language in classroom activities
- Participate in and support Land Based learning activities
- Assist in the preparation, instruction and delivery Hul’q’umi’num’ lesson plans as per Quw’utsun Syuw’entst language and culture curriculum
· Assist students completing assignments and in-class activities by providing further explanation and instruction
- Provide differentiated instruction to students with exceptional needs
· Assist the classroom teacher in tracking individual student performance throughout the year
· Provide individual and group instruction on cultural subjects and Hul’q’umi’num’ language
· Assist students with self-regulation strategies in partnership with classroom teachers
· Ensure a safe learning environment for all students
- Collaborate to work co-operatively and effectively with other educators in a collegial team setting
· Perform administrative duties, such as photocopying, marking and recording assignments, class demonstrations and daily anecdotal records as related to the program
· Attend professional development, school events / activities and staff meetings to improve student learning
· Attend team meetings and debrief with team members regarding student performance and upcoming program activities
· Adhere to policies and procedures to meet the obligations of the school
· Supervise students when involved in program related activities and lunch period as required
· Utilize and support internal resources when appropriate
· Prepare, assist and coordinate group and extracurricular activities as directed
· Develop positive relationships with students, staff and community
· Demonstrate positive role model behaviors to students
· Complete light cleaning duties as needed
· Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)
· Grade 12 or equivalent is required
· Certificate or diploma in Educational Assistant, Teaching Assistant or a related field is an asset; First Nations Language certificate/diploma is preferred
· 2 years’ experience working with students in a classroom setting
· Recent success as a teacher of First Nations learners
· First Aid & CPR certification is an asset
· Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector is required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
· High level of fluency in the Hul’q’umi’num’ language or willingness to learn
· Well-developed knowledge and understanding of Cowichan culture, language and traditions
· Ability to deliver, prepare, implement and complete daily learning activities including Cowichan language, culture and traditions
· Ability to collect traditional materials and participate in Cowichan arts, craft and cultural activities
· Well-developed interpersonal, oral communication and teamwork skills
· Basic working knowledge of MS Office Suites
· Strong organizational skills
· Must be physically able to endure rigorous and constant physical activity
May be required to lift up to 50 lbs.
