The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Fleet, Supply & Weapons Bureau is seeking a qualified individual to join our Garage Operations Unit. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will operate Highway Tractors/Car Carriers, Tilt and Load Tow Trucks and rotators to deliver, recover and transport OPP vehicles and vehicles involved in collisions/incidents and attend major events/incidents to provide incident support. You will operate heavy equipment vehicles and various other motorized vehicles to transport staff, and supplies including evidentiary items. To perform motor vehicle maintenance and various garage and fleet maintenance duties.

The results of this competition will be used to fill current and future opportunities with qualified eligible candidates during the next 12 months following the competition closing. There are no provisions for relocation, accommodation or travel (including meals or vehicles) for this position. Exact dates are to be determined.

Garage Operations is responsible for the equipping and decommissioning of every vehicle in the OPP fleet. A Garage Operations General Manager, who reports directly to the Bureau Commander, Fleet, Supply & Weapons Services Bureau (FSWSB), heads the section. The General Manager is responsible for the overall operation of the garage and staff.

Top Priorities:

  • Roll out of MWS & GPS equipped vehicles to the field.
  • GHQ vehicle repairs as well as special repairs to local area detachments.
  • RTR pool - maintain adequate supply of equipped vehicles for emergency and regular replacement of front-line patrol units.
  • Facilitating the roll out of Fleet Diversity to better meet the requirements of officers in the field.

About the job

To operate Highway Tractors/Car Carriers, Tilt and Load Tow Trucks and rotators to deliver, recover and transport OPP vehicles and vehicles involved in collisions/incidents and attend major events/incidents to provide incident support. To operate heavy equipment vehicles and various other motorized vehicles to transport staff, and supplies including evidentiary items. To perform motor vehicle maintenance and various garage and fleet maintenance duties.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation, including a psychological assessment.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class A, C, Z Drivers' Licence with air brake and manual operation endorsements.
  • Ability to maintain a clean driving record/abstract.
  • Must possess a Tow Driver Certificate under the Towing and Storage Safety Enforcement Act, including successful completion of mandatory Ontario Tow Truck Driver Training Course. Ability to successfully complete heavy tow truck and rotator training.
  • Must possess an Equipment Operator's permit to operate a reach truck (Forklift).
  • Within twelve (12) months, must be able to successfully complete heavy tow truck and heavy rotator training.
  • Ability to successfully requalify on all aspects of all heavy equipment vehicles based on the OPP's established training schedule.
  • Ability to pass certification of Dangerous Goods Handling and WHMIS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operating requirements and driving techniques for the various types of vehicles used when carrying out job tasks (e.g., driving tractor-trailers, multi-car carriers, straight trucks, tilt and load truck, tow trucks, rotators, forklifts, heavy equipment, vans, and cars) to ensure safe operation of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of towing trailers & hook ups, and securing loads including cars, motorcycles, boats, and recreational vehicles and knowledge to properly stow and load materials onto trucks and trailers.
  • Specific knowledge and skills related to heavy tow equipment operation, including but not limited to: rigging, winching, and load security.
  • Knowledge of automotive mechanics to be able to manipulate, load and/or tow vehicles while at an incident.
  • Written communication skills to maintain records and logs of vehicle usage/hours of work, maintenance, and repairs. Oral and interpersonal skills such as courtesy when discussing service issues, driving assignments or complaint issues with staff and passengers.
  • Ability to evaluate/possess situational awareness to determine safe operation and best course of action as it relates to the use of all vehicles within the fleet of the Transportation Unit.
  • Exercises discretion and tact and maintains confidentiality when participating in covert operations, picking up, transporting, and unloading forensic evidence including vehicles at crime scenes.
