Job Posting Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator/Laborer is responsible for operating heavy equipment and performing labour (mostly hardscape), in a safe and appropriate manner, for the purpose of servicing Ste. Anne’s various facilities. Some elements of construction, maintenance and contract work will apply. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, compactors and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator/Laborer must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures. The Heavy Equipment Operator/Laborer may also be asked to contribute to the snow plow schedule in winter, helping with snow removal. The Heavy Equipment Operator must deal with customers and employees of the Spa in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes responding to requests from staff, complaints, and work orders from management. The Heavy Equipment Operator/Laborer will work with their team members to accomplish Ste. - Operate gasoline and diesel powered units
- Operate hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and any other necessary mechanical components
- Troubleshoot various equipment systems
- Install and align engines and machinery
- Clean, lubricate and perform other minor maintenance work
- Oversee cargo handling and secure loads, including equipment preparation, application of safe practices, compliance with applicable Acts and regulations
- Perform trip inspections on equipment operated and load, ensuring safety and roadworthiness
- Maneuver trucks/heavy equipment into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
- Check vehicles before driving them to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
- Assist in loading and unloading of trucks
- Perform periodic inspections before, during, and after delivery to ensure that load is properly fastened down and is secure
- Ensure that materials are properly protected from the outdoor elements
- Ensure that any debris caused by the loading/unloading of truck is cleaned up
- Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles.
- Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations and compliances
- Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality
- Diagnose / identify defects in heavy duty equipment
- Accurate completion of work orders and time cards
- Keep detailed and accurate reports and documentation
- Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology and operation techniques
- Comply with applicable legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods, driver's hours of service, occupational health and safety, and weights and dimensions
- Check all load-related documentation to ensure that it is complete and accurate.
- Maintain logs of working hours and of vehicle service and repair status, following applicable provincial and federal regulations.
- Assisting with large scale landscape jobs (steps, patios, tree planting, seeding)
- Hand shovelling around utilities, hand shoveling for water/sewer/drainage fixes
- Perform various labour jobs, including: laying stone, interlock; assisting with hardscape projects; and hand digging, raking and seeding.
- Perform snow removal functions in winter, such as snow shovelling and operating the snow plow.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
- Class AZ/ARZ/DZ driver's license (abstract needed before hire)
- Heavy Equipment Operator Ticket
- 1-5years of experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator
- Computer Literate
- Knowledge of truck and equipment safety
- Knowledge of water, sewer and dump truck operation
- Knowledge of operation of front end loaders, dozers, excavators, compactors and other pieces of heavy equipment
- Fill out log books according to MTO regulations
- Chaining and securing loads for transportation
- Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance
- Air brake endorsement (Z) preferred
- Proficiency in trenching/sloping, sub grade, benching, backfill, bulking, etc. preferred
- Knowledge of digging around buried utilities preferred
- Transit experience preferred
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage an asset
- Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques an asset
- Demonstrated organizational skills with strong oral and written communication abilities an asset
- Organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques
- Professional/mature demeanor under stressful situations
- Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed
- Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment
- Strong attention to detail
- Experience in snow operations, loading, plowing, and salter operation preferred
Work Conditions
- On call availability may be required during winter
- Physical ability to lift up to 100lb
- Travel to off-site locations may be required
- Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, hard hat, vest/high-vis, etc
- Hazards associated with the trade
- Work both indoors and outdoors
- May be exposed to construction sites with associated hazards
