Our team offers deep expertise in archaeology (both historic and pre-contact), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), UAV surveys, Near-Surface Geophysics (NSG), geoarchaeology, and predictive modeling. WH provides professional services primarily to the oil and gas, mining, environmental, and government sectors across Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Position Summary
The GIS Technician will be responsible for supporting WH’s technical teams by providing specialized expertise in geospatial data management, spatial analysis, and cartographic production. The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of projects through the development and maintenance of geospatial databases and applications, supporting both internal research and client deliverables.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
· Provide GIS technical support across project teams using both ESRI software and open-source GIS (FOSS4G) tools.
· Design, manage, and maintain geospatial databases for internal and client-based projects.
· Conduct spatial analysis and modeling for applications in agriculture, mining, oil and gas, geology, and environmental monitoring.
· Produce high-quality maps, technical reports, spatial datasets, and presentation materials.
· Develop and implement custom GIS workflows and WebGIS applications using ESRI tools or open-source technologies.
· Administer WH’s cloud-based WebGIS platform: Environmental Footprint Monitoring Platform (EFMP), including data integrity, access control, and performance optimization.
· Support UAV data processing and drone-based image analysis for spatial products.
· Participate in data acquisition, field mapping, and cartographic support as needed.
· Contribute to machine learning or automation initiatives in GIS workflows (an asset, not required).
Qualifications and Requirements
· Diploma or degree in Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline; a Master's degree in Geography is preferred.
· Minimum of 3–5 years of hands-on experience with ArcGIS and/or equivalent open-source GIS platforms.
· Minimum of 1–2 years of demonstrated experience in WebGIS development (preferably PHP and Angular frameworks).
· Strong understanding of GIS principles, spatial data management, coordinate systems, and cartographic standards.
· Proficiency in database management (e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS) and geospatial metadata standards.
· Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
· Strong organizational and time management skills; able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
· Canadian work authorization is required.
Compensation and Benefits
· Wages: $21.00–$31.00/hour, based on experience and qualifications
