Position: Telephone Interpreter (Fukianese/Min Dong (Eastern Min)-English)
Overview:
This entry-level remote position is ideal for individuals fluent in both English and Fukianese/Min Dong (Eastern Min). While prior interpreting experience (minimum one year) is preferred, it is not a strict requirement. Strong listening and speaking skills in both languages are essential.
As a Telephone Interpreter, you’ll facilitate real-time conversations between English and Fukianese/Min Dong (Eastern Min) speakers over the phone. Your role is to accurately and impartially interpret spoken communication while maintaining the original tone, intent, and meaning. A professional demeanor, cultural awareness, and the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations are key to success.
Work Environment:
This is a work-from-home opportunity. Interpreters must operate from a quiet, secure, and distraction-free space—such as a private office or dedicated workspace. Interpreters are encouraged to use tools like notebooks, dictionaries, glossaries, and writing utensils for accuracy and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver accurate, complete, and culturally appropriate interpretation between Fukianese/Min Dong (Eastern Min) and English speakers
- Maintain correct grammar, tone, and intent of original conversations in both languages
- Handle calls on a wide range of topics, from routine matters to specialized conversations (e.g., healthcare, legal, insurance, and emergency services)
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with consistent pronunciation and professional conduct
- Apply industry-specific terminology appropriately and consult provided reference materials as needed
- Remain composed and unbiased, even during emotionally charged or emergency calls
- Follow client-specific protocols and provide cultural context when necessary to aid understanding
Qualifications:
- Fluency in both Fukianese/Min Dong (Eastern Min) and English, with excellent speaking and comprehension skills
- In-depth understanding of cultural nuances and idiomatic expressions in both languages
- Strong note-taking, memory, and active listening skills
- Familiarity with industry-relevant terminology or willingness to learn using provided glossaries and resources
- Ability to stay focused, objective, and discreet during interpretation sessions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Educational background in language studies, interpreting, or a related field
- At least one year of experience in a similar interpreting or bilingual support role
