Finance Manager

Black Gold School Division is seeking a highly experienced Finance Manager possessing a CPA designation, to effectively perform a key role within our Finance department. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the main responsibilities of this position include supervising the accounts payable team and providing assistance with the preparation of the year-end financial statements and audit. The ideal candidate will possess an extensive background in finance and accounting, with a proven track record of proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor the Accounts Payable team
- Oversee weekly cheque runs and ensure accurate, timely disbursement of payments
- Collaborate with school principals and department heads to ensure invoices and reimbursements are processed properly
- Prepare and review data interfaces for high-volume or complex transactions
- Manage and reconcile U.S. payments through online banking systems
- Verify general ledger coding for expenditures, ensuring alignment with approved budgets
- Provide training and ongoing support to school secretaries on internal administrative procedures
- Oversee reconciliation and monthly review of purchase card transactions in atrieveERP
- Ensure vendor records are accurate, complete, and current
- Assist the Associate Superintendent of Business & Finance with annual budget development
- Analyze expenditures, provide recommendations, and prepare financial projections
- Collaborate with department heads to refine and monitor budgets
- Provide monthly financial reports, variance analysis, and budget updates for assigned departments
- Oversee reconciliation of the Division’s main operating bank account
- Track and monitor restricted grant funding to ensure proper allocation and compliance
- Prepare the annual registered charity return in accordance with CRA requirements
- Assist with preparation of annual audited financial statements and year end working papers
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Finance
Qualifications:
- CPA designation is required
- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles, including payroll, financial reporting, analysis, and budgeting
- Supervisory experience required
- Proven ability to lead a team and build positive working relationships
- Knowledge of audit, control, and reconciliation procedures with experience in applying internal controls in a business environment
- Proficient in Windows and Google environments, with strong data analysis skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel tools, formulas, and formatting
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines, allocate resources, and manage competing deadlines in a dynamic, growing environment
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment of cooperation, respect, and integrity
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, time management, and organizational skills
- Previous work experience in a School Division would be considered an asset
Salary/Benefits:
- The start date for this 12-month position will be determined upon hiring
- Salary commensurate with training and experience (Pay Level 9: $88,529 – $116,491)
