Scope of Responsibilities

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher shall be responsible for the implementation and support of English as an Additional Language policies and guidelines within schools. The EAL Teacher will assist in the assessment of needs to determine allocation of staff and resources for schools, provide leadership in the development of regional EAL practices, plan and facilitate professional development for teachers as required, develop programs, provide instruction, and monitor the progress of EAL students within the region. Working collaboratively as members of schools’ Teaching Support and the Student Planning Teams, the EAL Teacher will report directly to the Coordinator of Student Services.


Competencies Required

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher shall have the following competencies:

(a) The ability to apply knowledge and understanding of newcomers and EAL within an education setting;

(b) The ability to apply leadership and support in the delivery of provincial and regional EAL policies from implementation and instruction to evaluation and the effectiveness of the delivery process;

(c) The ability to provide leadership in support of initiatives, programs and services focused on culturally and linguistically appropriate practices for student success;

(d) The ability to provide leadership in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to student achievement;

(e) The ability to analyze problems and formulate recommendations to develop policies, processes, and practices which result in the implementation of best practices with respect to EAL students and related services;

(f) The ability to work successfully in a team environment;

(g) The ability to plan, organize, and facilitate professional development sessions;

(h) The ability to use current technology;

(i) The ability to apply effective strategies for problem solving and conflict resolution through strong interpersonal, oral and written skills with a focus and understanding of intercultural communication;

(j) The ability to work and communicate effectively within the AVRCE, with students, parents/guardians, and at the provincial level with the EECD;

(k) The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, culturally relevant pedagogy, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity;

(l) The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;

(m) The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality.


Qualifications

  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate;
  • Experience teaching in a variety of cultures;
  • Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience at various levels;
  • Training/certification in EAL (TESL, TESOL, TEAL, Linguistics).

Specific Job Components

The English as an Additional Language Teacher shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Coordinator of Student Services. These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the organization and may include but not be limited to the following:

  • Support the implementation of provincial and regional EAL policies, guidelines and directives;
  • Assist in the assessment of school needs to determine allocation of EAL staff and resources;
  • Provide leadership and consultation to principals and site-based and circuit EAL staff on matters related to program delivery;
  • Participate in the development of priorities and the implementation of center-wide professional development needs to support the school improvement process;
  • Assist school staff in the placement of EAL newcomer students;
  • Support principals in establishing working links with support agencies, community groups and intergovernmental departments on initiatives which address cultural and linguistic diversity in support of student achievement;
  • Represent AVRCE as a liaison with community agencies and intergovernmental departments in support of EAL within the region;
  • Represent the Coordinator at regional or provincial meetings;
  • Use vehicle for travel from school to school;
  • Other duties as required.
