The Education Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the on-going development, coordination, and evaluation of a variety of environmental education programs including public programs and events, private programs, community outreach and engagement, school programs, teacher workshops, and kids’ camps and clubs. The role supervises the Education Department staff: Public Environmental Education Coordinator, School Programs Coordinator, Camps & Clubs Coordinator, Community Engagement Coordinator, and indirectly supervises the department’s several interns and seasonal staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the development and implementation of environmental education programs in alignment with SPE’s mission and Strategic Plan;
- Regularly evaluate and update program content, delivery methods, and materials to reflect current environmental science and BC curriculum updates;
- Ensure that all programs operate safely and are supported by appropriate safety plans;
- Occasionally deliver programs to maintain familiarity with content and provide coverage as needed;
- Lead hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations for all education staff;
- Manage and support the Education team of coordinators, interns, and seasonal staff;
- Develop the Education Department’s annual work plan and budget with input from the Education team and for review with the Executive Director;
- Oversee implementation of annual work plan and monitor Education Department metrics – prepare monthly reports to the Board, financial reconciliations, and quarterly updates for information and evaluation with the Executive Director;
- Develop and implement individual annual work plan, evaluate quarterly with Executive Director;
- Collaborate with the Development and Communications Manager and Executive Director to develop content for grant applications and sponsorship/donations proposals, program budgets, and reports/updates to funders;
- Lead staff in developing and maintaining program registration systems, seasonal scheduling, pricing and promotion.
- Lead establishing and maintaining relationships with key partners such as Vancouver School Board, granters, Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration collaborators etc;
- Contribute Education content to SPE newsletter, web contents, and other comms;
- Keep staff and volunteers informed about programs and new developments by attending Board, manager, and staff meetings and participating in board/staff planning sessions as required;
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator to support Education Department volunteers and student placements. Maintain up-to-date manuals and information for all programs and positions;
QualificationsEducation and Experience
- Minimum two years management experience, preferably in a non-profit setting;
- Minimum two years teaching, training, and/or interpretation experience;
- Degree in a related field (education, conservation biology, ecology, environmental education) or related equivalent work experience;
- BC teacher certification, elementary level an asset;
- Knowledge of current and evolving Ministry of Education curricula an asset;
- Experience working with diverse groups including First Nations, planners, environmental organizations, government agencies and others an asset;
- Strong knowledge of BC’s ecosystems, ecological conservation an asset
Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills across internal and external stakeholders;
- Strategic thinker with a collaborative work style and proven ability to take initiative and carry projects to completion with minimal supervision;
- Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize, solve problems, and meet deadlines;
- Excellent writing skills and speaking skills, and able to engage diverse audiences effectively;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and online tools (ie. Canva, Mailchimp, WordPress), experience with registration systems such as Acuity Scheduling and Zeffy is an asset;
- Ability to work some evenings/weekends and willingness to work outdoors (rain or shine)
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations
- Criminal Record check including vulnerable sector search required if hired;
- Emergency First Aid including CPR C required if hired;
- Class 5 BC Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract a strong asset.

Job Type: Full-time (37.5 hours/week), permenent
Location: Stanley Park Pavilion – hybrid (3 days in-office, 2 days remote)
Start Date: June 2025
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary: $55,000 – $63,000/year, commensurate with experience
- Two weeks’ paid vacation increasing by one week for each year worked up to five weeks
- Extended health benefits (after 6 months)
- RRSP contribution program (after 1 year)
