Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Driller to join our field team in Manitoba. This role involves operating directional drilling equipment for the installation of underground fiber, conduit, and utility infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have solid experience with Vermeer or Ditch Witch drills, understand underground utility safety practices, and be comfortable working in active construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate directional drills (Vermeer, Ditch Witch) to install fiber optic cables, conduit, or other utilities
- Interpret and follow construction plans, bore profiles, and locate information
- Monitor bore path and make real-time adjustments to avoid underground conflicts
- Collaborate with locators, foremen, and crew members to complete tasks safely and efficiently
- Conduct daily equipment checks and maintain machinery in working condition
- Perform spade work, assist with hydro-vac excavation, and handle fiber drops when needed
- Complete daily reports and communicate job status with supervisors
- Maintain clean and safe work zones in accordance with company safety policies and OHSA regulations
Qualifications
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience as a driller in telecom, utility, or civil construction
- Proficient in operating Vermeer or Ditch Witch directional drills
- Ability to read and understand bore plans, locates, and utility maps
- Familiar with spade work, fiber drops, and related underground utility tasks
- Excellent problem-solving skills and situational awareness
- Strong understanding of job site safety and trenching best practices
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and performing physically demanding tasks
- Experience working on construction sites, demonstrating an understanding of site safety practices.
- Familiarity with heavy equipment operation, including but not limited to Caterpillar machinery and water trucks.
Certifications & Requirements
- Valid Class G Driver’s License (Class DZ or AZ preferred)
- First Aid & CPR Certification
- WHMIS, Fall Protection, and Confined Space Entry (or willingness to obtain)
- Knowledge of OHSA and local safety standards
- Ability to travel to different job sites across Manitoba as required
