Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director of Development is accountable for developing and implementing strategies to grow, cultivate and steward donor relationships, with the main purpose of securing annual operating funding and major gifts to support FWA’s mission, programs, as well as develop special capital campaigns.


As a member of the Executive Team, the Director of Development has expertise and a proven track record in fundraising and philanthropic management and strategy as required to lead a dedicated team to drive philanthropic growth and impact to FWA.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes a comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet annual revenue goals
  • Prepare and oversee the execution of a fundraising budget and annual plan to secure grants and donations that includes challenging but achievable revenue goals for individual, corporate, government and foundation donations to support the operations of FWA
  • Build, maintain and grow relationships with high net worth individuals, corporations and foundations to secure major gifts and donations
  • Oversee donor recognition programs, ensuring stewardship, engagement and retention
  • Research and prospect new funding opportunities, and oversee grant writing
  • Oversee the development and execution of special events and campaigns to increase philanthropic support
  • Collaborate with program managers and department leads to align fundraising efforts with organizational priorities
  • Coordinate with the Communications & Brand Manager for fundraising printed and promotional materials, articles for newsletters, maintaining development-related relevant website content and manage updates, prepare impact reports and communication plan for donors
  • Support the development of a case for support for the FWA endowment fund
  • Prepare various reports, presentations as required, internally and externally
  • Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of the success of existing fund development strategies
  • Provide leadership and mentor the department in all respects, including hiring, training, day-to-day management and coaching of the Development team to develop and reach revenue targets
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in a related field ie: Non-profit Management, Business Administration or (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) or in the process of working towards certification
  • Association of Fundraising Professional (AFP) member
  • Proven track record of successfully securing major gifts and meeting fundraising targets
  • High level of strategic thinking and problem solving abilities
  • Proven track record of managing a collaborative team with setting clear team goals, delegating tasks effectively, providing constructive feedback, and motivating team members to achieve collective success
  • Strong knowledge of philanthropy best practices and trends in a non-profit setting, high ethical standards, and a strong professional network in Manitoba
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Proficiency in the use of fundraising software and CRM systems (Raiser’s Edge NXT)
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively and supportively across all departments within FWA
  • A passion for youth, nature, and sustainability
