We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Food Safety to join our team remotely, driving critical food safety initiatives across our food-grade facilities.
Summary:
Reporting to the VP Operations & C&I, this key position is responsible for leading new, critical corporate food safety initiatives, with broad responsibilities across the Food Grade facilities involving, product quality, food safety, US and Canadian regulatory, third-party certifications, customer facing technical sales support, and advocacy.
How will you contribute to the team?
To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following
- Lead the strategic design, development, and governance of company-wide food safety and quality programs across all food-grade sites.
- Establish organizational framework to ensure compliance within U.S. (FDA, USDA) and Canadian (CFIA, Health Canada) regulatory bodies and any applicable global standards.
- Oversee food safety certifications (e.g. SQF, HACCP, GFSI) including audit preparation, corrective actions, and renewals across all facilities.
- Direct the standardization and integration of food safety procedures, documentation systems, and performance metrics across all sites.
- Develop company-wide training strategies and guide operational leadership teams to build capacity in food safety and quality standards and practices.
- Serve as the Sr. Level subject matter expert and corporate spokesperson on food safety and quality matters for key internal and external stakeholders.
- Stay current on food safety regulations, trends, and technologies to ensure continuous improvement and risk mitigation.
- Provide Sr. Level oversight of certification audits across all sites and direct teams to implement key quality initiatives.
- Lead the development of a company-wide Food Safety Management System and Best-Practice implementation in partnership with production sites.
- Direct company-wide Root Cause Analysis and Corrective and Preventive Action strategies in response to customer complaints and major food safety deviations.
- Oversee company-wide document control processes and ensure the integration of corporate procedures.
- Collaborate with Product Management on Product Data Sheet process.
- Lead, design, and refine corporate audit program including internal and third-party audits and report outcomes appropriately to key organizational stakeholders.
- Perform other related duties as required.
What should you bring to the role?
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in Food Science, Microbiology, Quality Assurance or related field.
- 10 years of experience in food safety, quality and regulatory roles within food-grade manufacturing or processing environments.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian and US food safety regulations, industry standards, and third-party certifications (e.g. GFSI, HACCP, SQF, BRC).
- Strong leadership and communication skills with experience managing cross-functional and multi-site teams
- Proven track record of leading successful audits and driving food safety improvements.
- Ability to travel to multiple sites across Canadian and the USA, as needed.
- Primarily remote-based, with regular travel to production facilities (estimated 25%-40%).
- Demonstrated experience in technical problem solving.
- Superior organizational and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Quality Assurance or related field.
