Job Summary:
Working as a part of the Langara College Foundation team, the Development Officer – Faculty of Management is an essential point of contact between the business community and Langara College. In support of the Langara School of Management’s (LSM) advancement activities, the Development Officer coordinates the academic linkages to business, marketing and business development opportunities, sponsorship and strategic marketing initiatives; and develops partnerships and funding opportunities and that support student learning in the classroom, as well as their transition to work/careers. These opportunities will play a key role in attracting the business community and fostering alumni relationships to create partnerships, work integrated learning experiences and employment opportunities for students.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Foundation, the Development Officer will identify prospects, cultivate relationships and solicit sponsorships, program partnerships, event opportunities; as well as work integrated learning opportunities to support the growth of student support and development of the LSM. This includes moving prospects through the donor cycle and/or planning and executing fundraising appeals, conducting research, engaging alumni, developing program strategies and preparing business proposals. This role will support a broad range of organizational goals by aligning a comprehensive strategy with the Foundation and College’s strategic plan and growth initiatives.

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:
Partnership Development : Focuses on securing partnerships, which support LSM students and strategic priorities. Creates tailored proposals for partnerships, sponsorships and philanthropic donations based on giving history, preference and information gathered through research and personal meetings with prospects. Moves potential sponsors, partners and donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure. Co-ordinates the LSM senior management’s engagement with prospects to facilitate maximum support for the School. Develops and directs the implementation of strategies for closing sponsorship or gift solicitations. Oversees the development and management of a prospect portfolio for the purpose of discovery, cultivation and solicitation strategies for gift prospects. Develops proposals and works with partners, sponsors or donors to generate revenue for priority projects within the School ranging in scope from $1,000 to $25,000. Manages prospect profiles by recording information including, but not limited to, correspondence, briefing notes, family and business history, sponsorship /donation preference, etc. Prospect Development: Establishes relationships and strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations that support the goals and objectives of the LSM. Identifies and qualifies prospective donors and develops relationship to propose and solicit partnership opportunities Creates an inventory and manages a prospect list of all business, organizations and individuals who current support or could support the LSM in a variety of ways; including but not limited to guest speakers, course project sponsors, program sponsors, donors, events, or other activities that advance the LSM experience to students. Networks and develops relationships with all prospects. Liaises with faculty and other department representatives to act on business community opportunities. Tracks and reports on progress of the partnership program throughout the year.
Event Management: Assists with coordinating program, cultivation and/or recognition events, and other special events as required. Coordinates alumni engagement events and activities. Attends community event and supports campus events and may accompany current and prospective sponsors, partners or donors to continually cultivate relationships. Co-ordinates and supports LSM fundraising initiatives.
Stewardship: Produces materials and utilizes Foundation tools to communicate regularly with donors, supporters and prospects. Ensures quality communications follow all gifts to provide thanks and documentation to donors. Maintains a stewardship portfolio, ensuring that donors receive personalized correspondence and reports. Actively participates and occasionally leads with cultivation events that identify and implement opportunities for donor recognition, stewardship and appreciation.
Performs other related duties and/or projects, as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Specialized training in one or more areas including: sponsorship, sales, business to business marketing, and/or fundraising.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of recent related experience working, at least two years of direct work experience in writing business, sponsorship and/or fundraising proposals, and/or implementing marketing strategies
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience working with a prospect management system (i.e. Raiser’s Edge) or similar CRM.

  • Intermediate working level with MS Office including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Working Conditions
  • Occasional evenings and or weekend work may be required for special events or for partnership development.
  • Must have a current Class 5 BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle as there may be travelling required for sponsor, partner or donor meetings within the Lower Mainland, off-campus or possibly out-of-town
