The Innovation team is seeking a Data Engineering Developer to join our dynamic, multi-disciplinary team. This role is responsible for designing and optimizing data storage solutions, managing databases, automating data pipelines provisioning, and deploying containerized workloads in hybrid cloud and on-prem environments. The role leads the extraction, analysis, transformation, and ingestion of data from new and current strategic data sources into the Innovation centralized Digital Ship Data Hub platform. This permanent position is part of the Seaspan Innovation team at Vancouver Shipyards, offering exposure to and participation in Innovation and Business Development strategies through government-related projects for the Canadian Coast Guard, Navy, and other marine industry partners.
Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.
What you’ll do
- Develops, implements, and manages centralized data storage workloads to build a high-performance, resilient, and compliant data management framework
- Designs, optimizes, and manages relational and non-relational database models, schemas, and storage solutions to ensure structured and unstructured vessel-related data is efficiently and securely stored, accessed, and maintained throughout its lifecycle.
- Leads raw vessel time-series data analysis, mapping, normalization, and validation to ensure compatibility with the target database schema for ingestion into the Digital Ship Data Hub.
- Builds and maintains automated data provisioning and deployment pipelines to enable efficient extraction, transformation, and loading of data into the hybrid cloud and on-prem database infrastructure.
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration and reliable operation of deployed API microservices and machine learning pipelines within the overall centralized data-driven architecture.
- Documents system architecture, workflows, and database management procedures to support operational efficiency, knowledge sharing, and future scalability of Digital Ship platform extensions.
What you’ll bring
- An undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline related to software development or data management systems, along with 5+ years of proven industry experience.
- Strong expertise in designing, building, optimizing, and managing scalable, resilient, and secure data infrastructure, gained through experience as a Data Engineering Developer or related IT roles.
- Demonstrated experience in relational and non-relational database engineering, particularly with PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, and MongoDB, including database modeling, schema design, performance optimization, SQL query tuning, and full-lifecycle database management.
- Proven expertise in time-series data processing and analytics, including the analysis, mapping, normalization, and validation of data from diverse source systems to design destination warehouse schemas and data lakes for downstream consumption via SQL, APIs, and machine learning pipelines.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, PowerShell, or Bash to implement data pipeline modules, automate deployments, maintain databases, and troubleshoot operational workflows within the Digital Ship platform.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on diagnosing and resolving issues in deployed hybrid cloud and on-prem data infrastructure, ensuring high availability, optimal performance, security compliance with data governance best practices, and cost efficiency.
- Effective team player with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Hands-on experience in Agile Scrum environments, contributing through collaborative meetings to deliver maintainable, high-quality data pipelines and backend services supporting Digital Ship platform initiatives.
- Relevant industry certifications are considered an asset.

The estimated salary for this position is $105,300 - $128,700. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
