The Legal Services Branch for the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Ministry of Northern Economic Development and Growth (the “Ministries”) has an immediate opening for a senior or intermediate legal counsel to support the implementation of the Ministry's “One Project, One Process” (1P1P) model and other priorities of the Ministry.
This position offers interesting work in a small and collegial branch.
The main focus of the work will be in providing legal support and advice to the Ministry of Energy and Mines with respect to mining and resource development law, environmental law and administrative law, supporting the implementation of the Ministry's 1P1P model and other priorities of the Ministry.
About the job
Duties will include:- Providing written and oral legal advice in a variety of areas including mining and resource development law, environmental law, and administrative law to support implementation of the 1P1P model, development of Ministry policies, operational approaches and other Ministry priorities
- Providing regulatory advice and statutory interpretation
- Drafting legislation, regulations, Orders in Council, Minister's orders, and related documents
- Providing in-depth legal research and analysis through opinions
- Providing legal support to clients to support issues management and communication products
- Providing litigation support
- Delivering presentations and providing training to the Ministries' staff
- Briefing senior management
- Taking on special projects and assignments as needed
- Travel to the northern regions may be required
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
- Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of mining and resource development law, environmental law and administrative law
- Demonstrated experience in developing and drafting legislation and regulations
- Demonstrated experience in drafting legal instruments such as Orders in Council and Minister's orders
- Demonstrated project management experience
- Demonstrated ability and judgment to help manage complex and contentious issues
- Demonstrated experience in and aptitude for legal research and opinion writing, statutory interpretation and operational policy development work
- Demonstrated knowledge of the mining industry and other natural resource industries
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and work with, Indigenous communities and their respective legal counsel
- Demonstrated analytical and judgment skills to recognize and assess legal implications of Ministries and government initiatives
- Demonstrated policy and political acuity
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle a high volume of work on short notice and with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to provide great client service in a diverse and inclusive workplace
- Proven ability to build positive relationships with clients and colleagues
