Coordinator of Student Mental Health

Job Purpose

The Coordinator of Student Mental Health will lead and oversee mental health programs and initiatives for the school division, ensuring the mental, emotional, and behavioral well-being of students. The role involves collaboration with schools, families, and community partners to create a supportive and inclusive environment. This position will develop and implement strategic plans, manage mental health services delivery, and provide guidance on crisis interventions, counseling, and prevention programs.

1. Role Expectation: Mental Health Program Development & Implementation

1.1 Lead the design, development, and execution of mental health programs across the division.

1.2 Collaborate with school administrators and staff to create mental health awareness and training programs with a focus on early intervention and support.

1.3 Implement mental health policies, ensuring alignment with provincial and federal regulations.

1.4 Provide leadership and oversight on the use of mental health screening tools and assessments.

2. Role Expectation: Crisis Management & Counseling Support

2.1 Supervise and provide guidance on crisis intervention strategies for students and staff.

2.2 Coordinate with external mental health professionals for complex cases and referrals.

2.3 Offer expertise and resources during critical incidents, working with school teams to provide immediate and ongoing support.

2.4 Maintain records of interventions, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with legal standards.


3. Role Expectation: Collaboration & Community Partnerships

3.1 Build and maintain relationships with community mental health providers, agencies, and organizations.

3.2 Collaborate with local health services to improve mental health resource accessibility for students and families.

3.3 Foster partnerships with parents and guardians, providing information, resources, and referrals to support student wellness.

3.4 Work with educational leaders and wellness coaches to integrate mental health services into academic and extracurricular activities.

4. Role Expectation: Staff Training & Professional Development

4.1 Work with school staff to learn to recognize and respond appropriately to mental health issues in students.

4.2 Mentor wellness coaches

4.3 Ensure ongoing education for all staff on up-to-date mental health practices and legislation.


5. Role Expectation: Data Collection & Reporting

5.1 Collect, analyze, and report data on the effectiveness of mental health programs and services.

5.2 Track mental health trends across the division and use data to inform decision-making.

5.3 Provide regular reports to the Superintendent and School Board on program outcomes, areas of need, and recommendations for improvement.

6. Role Expectation: Advocacy & Leadership

6.1 Serve as an advocate for mental health awareness within the school division and the broader community.

6.2 Participate in local, provincial, and national forums on mental health in education.

6.3 Lead the school division in adopting inclusive practices that promote the emotional and psychological well-being of students.

6.4 Develop and present mental health policies and guidelines to the board for approval.

Education:

Master’s Degree in Social Work, Registered Nurse, or other relevant health fields will be considered.
