Contract Opportunity: Field Technician – Water Quality
Independent Contractor Position

In the
role of Field Technician-Water Quality you lend overall support to our growing portfolio of
aquatic programs and projects; you get to work in the field, gain an
understanding of water sampling plans, collect samples, and analyse them.
Our ideal candidate for this role is someone
who enjoys the outdoors and is interested in working in remote natural
settings, likes to participate in field programs,
interpret environmental data, compose technical reports, and actively participate in the rapid
growth of Aski’s aquatic team.
Work Environment
The Field Technician works in various settings, including natural remote locations, industrial sites,
mines, offices, labs, and a range of assessment locations. During this work, the Field Technician may be required to hike, drive all-terrain vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles), collect environmental data from aquatic and terrestrial settings, and perform data
collection duties requiring a high level of physical fitness and the capacity to operate safely in remote environments. The ability to complete physically
demanding tasks, work for prolonged periods in natural settings and
potentially adverse weather conditions and successfully learn to make good judgment
calls is a key requirement for this position.
Key Responsibilities
Field-Based Tasks:
- Conduct site observations and ensure a safe work environment at all times.
- Collect water samples as directed and in alignment with provincial guidelines, site-specific plans, and permits.
- Assist in air quality and wildlife monitoring efforts
- Support groundwater monitoring efforts (e.g., bottle filling, labeling).
- Calibrate and maintain sampling instruments.
- Perform basic testing and quality assessments of water samples (e.g., clarity, flow, conductivity, pH, turbidity, etc.,).
- Learn and apply sampling plans and contribute to environmental compliance work.
- Compile and manage field data; upload for project tracking and regulatory needs.
- Follow emergency response plans (ERP) and participate in field safety drills.
- Arrange proper disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials according to best practices.
Office/Administrative Support:
- Support logistics, data upload, organization of project resources, and supplemental reporting.
- Participate in scheduled check-ins or remote meetings with internal teams.
- Communicate with project managers and leads to provide updates and receive direction.
- Maintain digital records of work completed and coordinate schedules based on project needs.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Who This Contract is Ideal For

- Proactive about field safety and responsible work practices.
- Capable of working both independently and as part of a field crew.
Requirements
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with clean abstract.
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in environmental science or related field is an asset.
- Physically fit and able to work 10–12-hour days in outdoor, remote environments.
- Comfortable with ATV/UTV/snowmobile use (or willing to obtain certification).
- Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
Project Schedule
- Field shifts may vary by project and are typically scheduled in blocks such as:
- 7 days on / 7 days off or
- 4 days on / 3 days off, working up to 12-hour days.
- This is a contractor role, and compensation will be negotiated based on experience, availability, and project scope.
- Contractors are responsible for their own insurance, vehicle (if required), and maintaining any necessary certifications (First Aid, ATV Safety, etc.).
