We are currently hiring a contract Capital Expenditure Buyer to join the Procurement team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario. This a 12-month contract position.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.
Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
HOW WILL YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEAM?
This position reports to the Goderich Mine Procurement Manager. It is responsible for sourcing and negotiating equipment, material, components, and services of Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) within the cost, technical and quality parameters, and delivery requirements. Ensure an interrupted supply of capital goods and services for Compass Minerals capital projects, mainly for the Goderich Mine.
- Receive, audit, and prioritize purchase requisitions ensuring appropriate budget availability and delivery lead-times.
- Negotiate contract, price, delivery and payment terms minimizing costs, while ensuring the requested delivery terms adequately meet the requirements of the Company.
- Prepare and issue purchase orders in accordance with company policy and negotiated terms and conditions.
- Maintain open purchase orders and expedite as required.
- Ensure that all procured material and / or equipment is ordered and received on time, according to quality standards to support production schedule and strategy.
- Liaise with operations and engineering departments to understand capex and industrial requirements and assist with planning, estimating, and executing of major capital projects.
- Maintain procurement files including tracking of purchasing activity, measurements, tracking supplier quality, creating and implementing KPIs, and monitoring supplier performance / compliance.
- Work closely with maintenance planners and operations in quoting and sourcing non stock needs.
- Analyze inventory levels on new and existing consumable stock items and purchases for new capital equipment to ensure the sites have sufficient parts to maintain the purchased equipment.
- Monitor macro trends in supplier and contract base, as well as price increases, and quality-related issues.
- Introduce and develop relationships with key suppliers with the goal to reduce costs and secure sourcing agreements.
- Develop a sourcing strategy to support the competitive growth within the approved suppliers list.
- Support the Procurement Manager in the preparation of Strategic Contracting Strategies as part of cross-functional teams.
- Effectively manage all pre and post award procurement activities for major projects
- Manage supplier performance, quality and compliance with company requirements.
- Complete Non Conformity Report process with suppliers and address Root Cause Analysis as required.
- Liaise with Accounts Payable to ensure outstanding issues are addressed in a timely manner with suppliers.
- Assist with the monitoring of continuous cost improvement, process improvement, safety, training and work activities related to the operation with an emphasis on controlling costs, total cost of ownership and inventory systems proficiency.
- Perform other related duties as required.
WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a technical discipline OR Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related area with equivalent experience in technical environments.
- Certified Purchasing Professional or Supply Chain Management Professional Certification or equivalent experience and working towards the certification, is desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a procurement and/or supply chain capacity with emphasis on capital purchasing, contract development, and negotiations.
- Experience with sourcing maintenance materials.
- Proven experience negotiating supplier agreements and developing supplier relationships.
- Prior experience with ERP software, JD Edwards, Coupa, Oracle Business Intelligence, is desirable.
- Project Management knowledge or experience would be considered an asset.
- Advanced computer skills required (Microsoft Office / Windows).
WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE?
- This is a Monday-Friday position.
- This position may be expected to work underground.
- If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate.
