The Splatsin are the most southern tribe of the Shuswap Nation, the largest Interior Salish-speaking First Nation in Canada, whose aboriginal territory stretches from the BC/Alberta border near the Yellowhead Pass to the plateau west of the Fraser River, southeast to the Arrow Lakes and the upper reaches of the Columbia River.
Position Purpose
Support Splatsin families and children in ensuring the safety and protection of children and youth. Provision of guardianship services to Splatsin children in care.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop individual and customized child and youth care plans
- Ensure plans of care are suited to each child’s unique needs
- Conduct investigations and implementation of required follow up services
- Provision of support services to families
- Provide regular progress reports to Kukpi7 and Tkwamipla7s
- Liaise with internal department and outside agencies when required
- Provide emergency services
- Integrate Secwepemc/Splatsin culture and values in day-to-day practice
- Maintain caseload and all necessary paperwork
QUALIFICATIONS
- M.S.W or B.S.W or BA combined with at least two years’ experience in the field of social work and counseling.
- Experience in working with First Nations families and children in the field of child welfare.
- Knowledge of First Nation issues and culture including communities, family structure, customs and traditions are essential.
- Knowledge of the Splatsin community is valued.
- Empathy with families and children experiencing problems and stress.
- Personal maturity.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills including listening skills.
- Strong ability to build relationships and rapport.
- High ethical standards.
- Able to work with minimum supervision.
- Strong computer skills including knowledge of MS Office.
- Discretion & respect for confidentiality is essential.
- Valid driver’s license and clear abstract.
- Clean criminal record check, including vulnerable sector.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $41.00-$47.00 per hour
Expected hours: 35 per week
