Overview
We are seeking compassionate, dedicated and reliable Caregiver for a woman who has Alzheimer's but is still living at home in Moncton NB. In this role, you will provide much needed day-to-day support to a sweet lady while I am at work. Your schedule for work will be dependent of my schedule and you have to be available to work those hours. There might be the occasional Saturday every 3rd Saturday for a period of 4 hours only (not a full day).
You MUST be 100% alright to work in an INDOOR environment where there is cigarette smoke. Both mom and I smoke in the apartment (mom does not go outside on the deck to smoke nor should it be forced upon her). So, needless to say, it's alright if you are a smoker as well. Working in above average heat can also be a requirement because we live on the 4th floor of an apartment building and there is no mini split. Minimal use of A/C during the daytime (it's not as bad as it may sound).
You will essentially be contracting your services out to us in the sense that there will be no income taxes taken from your paycheck, we will not pay anything into Employment Insurance and there will be no T4 at the end of the year as well, no available Record of Employment either since you're not really an employee. You're fully responsible in declaring your income come tax season, we do not get involved. Thus, you would have to have a system to track your income. Pay is twice per month. I submit the time sheets on 2 days in the month (the 15th and the 30th or 31st) and shortly thereafter, your pay will be coming in. There will be a short period at the beginning where you will have to be able to sustain coming to work without receiving any pay since it could take a little time before the first paycheque comes in but then they will be fairly regular in timing. No backpay is kept on our end. As soon as we receive the funds to pay, we send them out to you.
The basic responsibilities are:
- Taking care of a woman with Alzheimer's which can be as easy as answering questions the whole day to sometimes something a little more complicated like perhaps helping her to get dressed the odd time here and there. Mom still baths on her own but you would have to run her bathwater for her since she doesn't know how to use the tap in the bathtub.
- Making her a coffee or refreshing her coffee.
- Light cooking (lunches and the odd snack), mom doesn't eat a lot so the cooking is really really basic for lunch.
- Light cleaning (mom's laundry, dusting, keeping the counters clean, etc)
- Being there and wanting to be there and be the crutch of a lovely person who needs a little bit more TLC than the average human being.
- Getting mom out of the apartment in case there is a fire and safely outside, calling 911 if there is a 911 type emergency
- Providing companionship
- There is NO ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATIONS in this role. I take care of mom's meds in the morning and at night. Perhaps the odd Tylenol if mom is experiencing light pains or headache.
Mom doesn't do that much during the run of a day. Mostly drinks her coffee, watches television (you would have to turn the channels), naps, periodically eats and that's pretty much it. If you happen to have a vehicle and want to take mom out for a short drive or whatever, that's up to you but is not really necessary. I don't mind if you have visitors every once in a while, but not constantly, if it happens that a friend of yours wants to drop by but to that respect, you can't run a daycare in my apartment either.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- First Aid and CPR
- Be a patient individual who understands Alzheimer's and is not intimidated by it but welcomes it as a new challenge.
- Be reliable, reliable, reliable... I hardly call in sick to work and my expectations is that you'll be the apartment taking care of mom when I am at work. Being on time is key since sometimes, I have to travel a distance to get to work and that means that I need to leave on schedule.
- Ability to perform cleaning tasks as needed to ensure a hygienic living space
- Physical capability to assist clients with mobility needs, including heavy lifting when required
- Excellent communication skills and a compassionate demeanor towards clients . Would help if you're bilingual French and English but not a deal breaker.
Currently, I am on leave and I am getting ready to get back to work. I am collecting resumes and I will contact the selected candidates when I receive word that I am starting work again. Shouldn't be too long. You would be expected to start fairly quickly once hired.
Please send your resume along and qualifications. I look forward in meeting you!
Cheers!
