We are now accepting applications for the position of Auxiliary Constable!

Auxiliary Constable is a volunteer position within the Greater Sudbury Police Service.

An Auxiliary Constable is responsible for accompanying and assisting Sworn members on patrol. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, collaborating with the Community Engagement Section on crime prevention initiatives, assisting officers in marine, bike, ATV and snow machine patrols and participating in community events.

The Auxiliary Unit consists of trained Auxiliary members who share our Services values of Respect, Inclusivity, Courage and Honesty and who represent the diverse cultural backgrounds, careers and age of the residents of the Greater Sudbury Area.

Due to the amount of time required in the selection and training process, we ask all members to commit to a minimum of three events per month, including a monthly meeting. Auxiliary members must be available for and successfully complete a one week training program as well as participate in annual training days once an active member of the Auxiliary Unit.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

GSPS Community Representative

  • Initiate police-community interaction.
  • Provide police visibility at local community events (i.e. parades, fairs, etc.).
  • Perform crowd management and ensure public safety at large community events, such as the Santa Claus Parade, Sudbury Rocks Marathon, etc.
  • In conjunction with the Community Engagement Section , assist with crime prevention and community mobilization activities.
  • Deliver the “Robbery Prevention” Program to small businesses, under the direction of the Community Engagement Section Sergeant.
  • Perform Traffic Safety initiatives (i.e. observations for caution letters, child safety seats, etc.).
  • Participate in the Notification of Community Crime (NOCC) Program.
  • Assist the Greater Sudbury Police Service at information booths for public events.
  • Assist in recruiting candidates for the GSPS Auxiliary Program.
  • Provide a visible presence in parks, cycling paths, ravines, walkways and other public spaces.
  • Participate in ride-alongs with police officers.
  • Actively and effectively participate in meetings, including attending monthly meetings.
  • Willingly attend and participate in call out events regardless of nature of event.
  • Return calls in a timely fashion.
  • Participate in assignments proportionately (special events and administrative assignments vs. ride-alongs).

Other Duties

  • Participate in Tactical Unit and hostage rescue training scenarios.
  • Assist with Public Safety & Emergency Planning unit training exercises, including emergency planning and preparedness.
  • Assist officers with marine, bike, ATV, and snow machine patrols.
  • Participate in a supportive role during missing persons searches (providing transportation for members to and from search area, transporting equipment or food, etc.).
  • Maintain perimeters at emergency incidents.
  • Provide transportation for members and/or transport equipment or food during emergencies.
  • Perform traffic control in emergency situations.
  • Assist other members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service and Auxiliary Unit.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, that do not conflict with the Police Services Act or the Greater Sudbury Police Service.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age (this is the Provincial minimum).
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D) or its equivalent (i.e. grade 12 from any province of Canada). Applicants educated outside Canada should refer to the Government of Canada - Education Assessment Resources.
  • Initially meet all qualifications and competencies of the Auxiliary Selection System Process.
  • Certified in Standard First-Aid and CPR (level "C").
  • Class 'G' driver's license with full driving privileges.
  • Must meet required vision and hearing standards.
  • Physically and mentally able to perform the duties of an Auxiliary Constable- must be able to pass the Greater Sudbury Police Service Fitness Test , as well as a medical and psychological assessment.
  • Successfully complete the Greater Sudbury Police Service Auxiliary Training Program.
  • Meet criteria established for fitness, knowledge of law, use of weapons, and other equipment.
  • Possession of Boater Safety Card considered an asset.
  • Experience operating snow machines and ATVs considered an asset.
  • Bilingualism considered an asset.
  • Experience with operating a pedal bike is considered an asset.
  • No criminal record for which a records suspension (pardon) has not been received and be of good moral character and habits.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements of the Greater Sudbury Police Services Background Clearance for Auxiliary members.
