Onua Bakery is an artisan bakery & café that specializes in freshly baked, handcrafted African-style baked goods and sourdough, including bread, cakes, cookies, meat pies, cupcakes, chips, and a variety of other delicious pastries. As we continue to expand, we’re eager to bring on new team members who share our passion for delivering the finest, freshly baked goods. We’re looking for an experienced Baker to join our growing team! If you have a strong background in West African baking, French artisan techniques (sourdough), and experience in an industrial kitchen, we’d love to hear from you.
As part of our team, you’ll bring your expertise in artisan baking to help shape our menu, crafting high-quality breads that reflect our unique fusion of flavors. This role is perfect for someone who is creative, a quick learner, and skilled in handling industrial baking equipment in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen.
Duties
- Prepare and bake artisanal West African Bread.
- Prepare and bake artisanal sourdough bread, including long fermentation and natural leavening techniques.
- Prepare pound cakes, chin chins, meat pies, cookies etc.
- Dough mixing, cutting, rolling, laying, forming, filling, shaping.
- Bake the mixed dough and batters.
- Requisition or order materials, equipment and supplies.
- Draw up production schedules.
- Ensure that the quality of products meets established standards.
- Operate machinery.
- Organize and maintain inventory.
- Responsible for cleanliness, hygiene, equipment and tools maintenance follow up and workplace safety of the production area.
Qualifications, Skills, and Conditions:
- Formal culinary or baking training is a plus but not required.
- Proven experience as an artisan baker, specializing in sourdough and African breads.
- Strong knowledge of fermentation, hydration, and natural leavening techniques.
- Passionate in cooking and baking, accurate and punctual, good communicator, friendly and teamworking
- Ability to follow recipes and adjust them to suit different products and customer needs.
- Ability to measure and document recipes.
- Ability to document processes and procedures.
- Attention to detail and commitment to consistency.
- The ability to communicate in French is an asset

Salary: $18.5 - 22/hour +
Physical Demands: The physical demands this position is exposed to are: The employee will be on feet most of the day. Employees must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Experience in cooking is a must, with a minimum of 3 years required. Additionally, possession of a Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent certification is preferred.
Location: Ottawa, ON K1N 0E7. Please note that you should be able to reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work.

Pay: $19.00-$22.00 per hour
Schedule:
- Evening shift
- Monday to Friday
- Morning shift
- Weekends as needed
