About Us


The Office of the Animal Care Committee (OACC) supports the Animal Care Committee (ACC) in overseeing the ethical use and care of animals in research, teaching, and testing at Western University and its affiliates, as part of the broader citywide Animal Ethics and Care Program (AECP). The program ensures that all animal-based activities conducted by faculty, staff, students, and affiliates meet the highest standards of animal welfare and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities


As part of the Office of Animal Care Committee (OACC), the ACC Coordinator manages the review and processing of Animal Use Protocols (AUPs), oversees the ACC’s SOPs, and ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. The role provides expert guidance to researchers, supports strategic planning and issue resolution, and liaises with stakeholders to facilitate timely approvals and accurate documentation in support of research at Western University and its affiliated institutions.

Qualifications


Education:

  • BSc in biological or health science
  • MSc in biological or health science preferred

Experience:

  • 3 years’ experience in animal-based research team environment
  • Experience working within a CCAC accredited animal care and use program

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Sound knowledge of National, Provincial and Institutional regulations and guidelines governing the ethical use of animals in research (e.g., CCAC, OMAFA, MAPP 7.12, ACC policies)
  • Understanding of scientific research methods and terminology relevant to animal-based research
  • Working knowledge of animal use protocol review systems and data management tools (e.g., Cayuse)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and diplomatically to diverse audiences
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage a high volume of work under tight deadlines
  • Advanced computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and electronic protocol management systems
  • Skilled in preparing reports, documentation, and correspondence with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Effective presentation and facilitation skills for training and stakeholder engagement
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism in handling sensitive or confidential matters
  • Capacity to resolve problems, manage conflict, and navigate challenging or ambiguous situations
  • Ability to support and adapt to change initiatives and evolving regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated initiative and accountability in managing projects from conception through implementation and evaluation
  • Ability to work in a fluid and challenging work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
