HOUSTON SECONDARY SCHOOL

.50 FTE TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUPPORT & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT *

(and other courses as determined by the needs of the timetable)

EFFECTIVE: September 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026

NOTE: *This position requires the candidate to work at the school in either of the following options:

  • Option A: Full school days every second day of the week. (i.e. Alternating - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for one week, then Tuesday and Thursday the next week).
  • Option B: Requires the teacher to work at the school every day of the week during the first two blocks of the day.
The successful candidate will:
  • Have University qualifications and successful teaching experience in teaching junior and senior level academic subjects
  • Have experience working with individuals and small groups of students in core curriculum
  • Have demonstrated success with students with behavioral and motivational challenges.
  • Embed the First Nations Principles of Learning in all subject areas
  • Be committed to and practice the philosophy of Inclusion
  • Knowledgeable with respect to the BC Graduation Program, with respect to post-secondary entrance requirements and guide students with their education and career planning
  • Have knowledge of local First Nations organizations and working with partner organizations to support our learners
  • Be able to teach, adapt, modify, and differentiate for a wide variety of learning styles and needs
  • Have good interpersonal skills and a history of successful classroom management
  • Have knowledge and commitment to using current assessment strategies, including formative assessment
  • Be sensitive to the unique needs of all learners
  • Have successful experience working with students with special needs
  • Have a commitment to work towards achieving the goals of the School Growth Plan
  • Be committed to working as a cooperative, collaborative member of a campus wide instructional team, working across the campus environment and attending meetings as required.
  • Have strong proven interpersonal skills, with the ability and desire to work collaboratively with parents, teachers, administrators, and other resource personnel, including community agencies

Houston Secondary School

SALARY: The starting annual salary for full-time teaching position ranges from $62,718 to $110,161, with placement on the range based on length of services and qualification in accordance with the collective agreement. Additionally, $3,035 annually as a Remote & Rural Allowance. (July 1, 2025 Salary adjustments will be implemented once the BCTF/BVTU collective agreement has been finalized and ratified by all parties.)
